Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response satisfies most requirements of the task by providing a clear overview and highlighting the main trends, such as the significant decline in couple households with dependent children and the marked increases in one-person households and lone parent families. Key data points are accurately cited from the table to support these trends. However, the length requirement is not met, as the response is four words short of the 150-word minimum once copied prompt words are excluded. Additionally, while the main features are successfully reported, some data comparisons could be extended further to fully explore all aspects of the table, placing the response at this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organization. Information is grouped sensibly, starting with an introductory overview, moving to the dominant declining category, and finishing with the growing categories. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'By contrast', and 'whereas' are utilized effectively to connect ideas, though referencing and paragraphing could be slightly more polished. The paragraph structure aids readability, and the progression from general trends to specific data points flows naturally, fulfilling the requirements for this band level.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

An adequate range of vocabulary is used to communicate the information effectively. The student attempts less common vocabulary items and phrases, such as 'steady decline', 'levelling off', 'sharpest relative rise', and 'tripling', which demonstrate a good effort to describe statistical data precisely. There are a few minor spelling and word choice slips, such as 'consistenly' instead of 'consistently', 'farly' instead of 'fairly', 'constrast' instead of 'contrast', and 'coupes' instead of 'couples'. However, these vocabulary and spelling errors do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with effective use of subordinate clauses and participial phrases, as seen in 'reaching 36 % in 2007' and 'with the biggest jump between 1981 and 1991'. There are some grammatical and punctuation errors, including missing punctuation between independent clauses, such as 'children. this figure', minor preposition usage issues, and spacing inconsistencies around percentage signs. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and do not impede communication, showing a solid control of a mixed range of structures.
