Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features, trends, and comparisons across the given timeframe. An effective overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting key overall trends such as the increase in people living alone and the decline in households with dependent children. Data from the table is accurately selected and appropriately used to support the descriptions, such as noting that dependent children fell from 52% to 36% and that single-person households doubled. The information is well-selected, showing a clear understanding of the visual data. To reach the highest band levels, the overview could be slightly more expansive or incorporate a more striking overarching comparison, but the current response fully satisfies the requirements of a solid performance in this area.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly, with an introductory paragraph, a well-defined overview, and detailed body paragraphs that logically break down the data categories. Cohesive devices are used adequately and appropriately, such as transitional phrases like 'Overall', 'In 1971', 'However', 'In contrast', and 'Similarly', which guide the reader smoothly through the text. Paragraphing is managed effectively, ensuring each section has a distinct focus. To move further up, referencing and cohesive links could occasionally be even more seamless, avoiding any slight mechanical feel, but the current structure maintains clear and coherent progression from start to finish.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and functional reporting language such as 'proportion', 'fluctuating', 'considerable', and 'substantial rise'. Word choices are generally appropriate and communication is not impeded. However, there are some minor lexical issues, such as the awkward phrasing 'alteration(in percentage)' in the opening sentence, spacing issues like 'aclear' and 'andin', and a slight misuse of 'household by household types' instead of 'households by type'. To achieve a higher band, a wider variety of sophisticated synonyms and more precise collocations should be employed consistently with fewer minor slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and varied introductory structures effectively. There are frequent error-free sentences, showing good control over basic grammatical patterns and past tense reporting. However, some minor grammatical and punctuation errors persist, such as the missing space after commas ('andin', 'household, while'), the preposition choice in 'change in some household types' where 'change over the period' might read more naturally, and minor phrasing slips. These errors rarely impede communication and represent a solid command of sentence structures, though greater precision across complex forms is needed for the next level.
