Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response sits at this level because the length requirement is not met, containing only 139 words and falling short of the 150-word minimum, with 9 words copied from the prompt left uncounted. While the student attempts to summarise the table by mentioning several categories like households with dependent children and lone parents, the selection of data is incomplete and contains inaccurate reporting. For instance, the claim that there were no changes in the number of one-family households and couples is factually incorrect according to the visual data. The overview is rudimentary and the details provided lack sufficient development and clarity, resulting in only a partial addressing of the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
Coherence is evident through basic paragraphing and introductory signposting such as 'Overall' and 'Between 1971 and 1981', but overall progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and awkward transitions. The response lacks a clear logical flow, and cohesive devices are used inadequately or inaccurately. For example, the phrase 'in contrast' and 'meanwhile' are awkwardly placed within overloaded sentences, making the relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as the ambiguous grouping of percentage changes in 'the three types of households', which detracts from the overall readability of the report.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common terms related to data reporting, such as 'percentages', 'stable', and 'decrease', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, form, and spelling. Examples of lexical inaccuracies include 'changement' instead of 'change', 'declined' instead of 'decline', 'remmained' with a spelling error, and 'slowely grew' where the adverb form is incorrect. These vocabulary slips and awkward collocations cause some difficulty for the reader and restrict the score to this band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Grammatical control is limited, featuring a narrow range of sentence structures with frequent errors. While the student attempts complex sentences, they are often faulty in construction and agreement, such as 'household with dependent children showed' where pluralisation is missed, or 'lone parent present the lowest numbers' with a subject-verb agreement error. There are also errors in prepositions and numerical patterns, such as 'increase by 2' without units or 'showed a slowely grew'. Punctuation and tense consistency also falter throughout the text, resulting in frequent errors that cause noticeable difficulty for the reader.
