Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response only partially addresses the task and contains significant inaccuracies in reading the data, reflecting a minimal level of task fulfillment. While an overall trend is attempted, some key features are misreported or misunderstood. For example, the writer incorrectly claims that 'Couple and One -family households were null in every year', completely misinterpreting the table structure where 'One-family households' is a category heading containing couples and lone parents. Furthermore, data selection is weak, focusing heavily on minor details or misunderstanding figures (such as writing '6, 10' without units for lone parents). To reach a higher level, the response must accurately report the categories from the table, select and compare meaningful trends such as the decline in dependent children and the rise in single-person households, and avoid misinterpreting table headers as zero values.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some basic organization present with paragraphs and transitional markers like 'Overall', 'To start with', and 'Probing further', but there is no clear overall progression or logical flow of ideas. Cohesive devices are sometimes used mechanically or inaccurately, such as starting body paragraphs with awkward phrases like 'To start with the term' or 'Probing further'. Paragraphing is attempted, but grouping of information is disjointed. Referencing within the text is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison of data across years. To improve in this area, the writer needs to ensure that cohesive devices connect sentences and paragraphs smoothly and logically, and that data points are grouped meaningfully by category or trend rather than listed in a confusing manner.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'dramtical' (which contains a spelling error) and 'residencies', but this is accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice and form that cause difficulty for the reader. For instance, 'Dependent chidrens' contains a pluralization error, and terms from the prompt are awkwardly manipulated. Spelling errors like 'chidrens', 'allover', and 'dramtical' detract from the quality of the writing. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical range with accurate spelling and appropriate collocations, using precise terminology directly related to statistical data reporting without distorting the original labels from the table.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of structures and frequent grammatical errors. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, they are often faulty or awkward, such as 'Dependent children were leading the highest bar allover the period witnessed with the top precentage of 52%'. Errors include incorrect preposition usage, article omission or misuse, and awkward verb forms like 'faces a dramtical change' when referring to past data. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To progress to a higher band, the student needs to demonstrate a greater variety of sentence structures with improved accuracy, paying closer attention to past tense consistency when describing historical data and ensuring accurate use of articles and prepositions.
