Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response makes an attempt to present an overview and cover the main trends in the table, such as the rise in one-person and lone-parent households alongside the decline in households with dependent children. However, the information is only partially addressed and the development is limited. Some of the data points are confusingly expressed or under-developed, for instance when discussing the figures for couples with no children or non-dependent children. While the student attempts to highlight key features, the overall selection lacks clarity and the message is sometimes obscured by weak organisation, placing the response at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation present in the writing, with attempts to separate the introduction, overall summary, and body details into paragraphs. However, there is no clear overall progression or logical flow between sentences and ideas, which makes the report difficult to follow smoothly. Cohesive devices are used very minimally or inaccurately, with repetitive transitional phrases like 'in which types' and 'in decreasing trend'. Furthermore, referencing and paragraphing are not managed effectively to guide the reader through the data, resulting in a disjointed structure that lacks appropriate cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate for discussing statistical data. There are frequent lexical errors and spelling mistakes throughout the text, such as 'illestrate', 'houshold', 'avaiable', 'tabel', 'cetagury', 'childern', 'mainwhile', 'consectivily', 'therfore', and 'dcreasing'. Word choices are often unnatural or imprecise, such as using 'decreasing factor' instead of a downward trend. While the meaning can generally be deciphered, these noticeable errors in spelling, word form, and word choice cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher mark.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors in complex formations. There are persistent mistakes in articles ('the great Britain', 'at top'), subject-verb agreement ('one person and lone parent household type was'), prepositions ('in 36 year of period'), and punctuation. Errors are frequent and often cause strain for the reader, significantly impacting readability and understanding. To improve, the student needs to focus on basic sentence construction, accurate use of verbs and tenses, and mastering grammatical boundaries.
