Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response partially addresses the task by reporting several features of the data, such as mentioning that the percentage of dependent children was very high in 1971 at 52 and that one-person households doubled by 2007. However, the information is presented in a somewhat disjointed manner, and the overall summary is very brief. While an overview is attempted, it lacks clarity and precision. Several figures are reported, but some descriptions are vague or inaccurate, such as stating that non-dependent children showed 'no difference' when the figures actually fluctuated slightly, or stating that the proportion of lone parents remained the same until 2007 despite rising to 12. To move to a higher band, the response needs to present a clearer, more fully developed overview of the main trends without getting bogged down in fragmented individual data points, ensuring all highlighted comparisons are accurate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text shows some basic organisation, opening with an introductory sentence and attempting to group information, but there is no clear overall progression. Paragraphing is weak, with the main body compressed into a single, dense block of text that lacks logical partitioning between different household types. Cohesive devices are minimal, mechanical, or inaccurate, with abrupt transitions such as 'in 1971 the ratio...' and 'On the other hand the ratio...' creating a choppy read. Pronoun referencing and substitution are poorly handled, making it difficult at times to follow which category is being discussed. To improve, the writer should use clear paragraph breaks to separate distinct trends, employ a wider and more accurate range of cohesive markers to link sentences smoothly, and ensure a logical sequence of information from introduction to overview to body details.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, featuring basic terms and frequent repetition of words like 'percentage', 'ratio', and 'number'. There are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word formation, such as 'illustratrates' (spelling), 'alteration' instead of 'change' or 'trend', 'contain' instead of 'accounted for' or 'stood at', and 'catagory'. Some phrases are awkward or unnatural, such as 'the lone parent contain' or 'takes the fraction of'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips occasionally cause confusion for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider and more precise range of vocabulary related to data trends, such as verbs and nouns of change (e.g., 'increase', 'decline', 'fluctuation'), and pay closer attention to spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences joined by basic conjunctions. Attempts at more complex structures are often faulty or incomplete. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'the lone parent contain', 'dependent childeren... was'), missing articles (e.g., 'with no difference'), incorrect prepositions, and pluralisation errors (e.g., 'childeren', 'no childeren catagory'). Punctuation is also problematic, with missing full stops, erratic capitalization, and run-on phrasing. These frequent errors cause difficulty and distraction for the reader. To progress, the student must work on foundational grammar rules, such as subject-verb agreement and plurals, while practicing error-free complex sentences with accurate punctuation.
