Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers some of the key features of the table, attempting an overview and reporting several figures such as the 1971 and 2007 data for one-person households and those with no children. However, the task is only partially addressed because the selection of data is somewhat erratic and fails to capture the broader trends clearly across all categories. For instance, the discussion of dependent children contains inaccuracies in reporting trends and relative sizes, describing it incorrectly at the end as making the highest and second-highest percentage alongside non-dependent children. Furthermore, nine words were copied directly from the prompt. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to select the most significant overall trends systematically and present a more accurate, fully developed summary of the data without misinterpreting the relative figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation in the essay, with an introductory sentence followed by body paragraphs attempting to group data. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow is disrupted by repetitive phrasing and awkward sequencing. Cohesive devices are used in a mechanical or inaccurate manner, such as 'Similiarly', 'Furthermore', and 'In the end', which fail to create natural links between ideas. Additionally, referencing is sometimes unclear, as seen in the sentence starting with 'Same as,non-dependent children category'. Paragraphing is attempted, but individual paragraphs lack internal cohesion and clear thematic development. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of appropriate transition signals more naturally and ensure that each paragraph builds logically upon the previous one to guide the reader smoothly through the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, relying heavily on simple terms and repeating words from the prompt such as 'percentage', 'category', and 'children'. There are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including 'ilustrates', 'Similiarly', and 'significantlly', which reflect a weak control of word forms and spelling. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary like 'fluctuated', inaccurate collocations and awkward phrasing appear frequently, such as 'making it the popular and highest percentage among categories'. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical range by incorporating more precise vocabulary for describing statistical changes, such as 'proportion', 'rose', 'declined', and 'substantially', while eliminating basic spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic relative clauses. When the writer attempts more complex structures, they are often faulty, leading to awkward and ungrammatical constructions such as 'the number of children which are dependent had the highest percentage' and 'type which is one person had increased slightly'. Frequent errors in punctuation and spacing are also present throughout the text, including missing spaces after commas and periods. Errors in articles, verb forms, and prepositional patterns occur regularly and can cause some difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer should incorporate a greater variety of error-free complex sentence forms, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and article usage, and ensure correct punctuation and spacing.
