Student answer (Band 7.0)

The table illustrates the change in some household types in Great Britain from 1971 to 2007.

Overall, it is clear that the percentage of people living alone, in childless couples and in lone-parent households increased over the period. In contrast, the figures for households with dependent and non-dependent children decreased.

To begin with, one-person households accounted for 6% in 1971, which increased to 11% in 1991 and again rose to 12% in 2001 and remained stable till 2007 at 12%. A similar pattern is seen for couples with no children. In 1971, 19% couples had no children, while the figure increased to 23% in 1991 and again increased to 25% in 2001 before being constant in 2007.

Turning to the remaining data, in contrast households with dependent children showed a downward trend from 52% in 1971 to 41% in 1991 and finally to 36% in 2007. Similarly, for households with non-dependent children the figure increased from 10% in 1971 to 11% in 1991 before falling to just 9% in 2007 showing slight fluctuation. However, the figure for lone parent households was 4% in 1971 which increased to 10% in 1991 and before reaching 12% in 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all main parts of the task, providing an accurate summary of the household trends between 1971 and 2007. The overview clearly highlights the overarching upward and downward trends across categories. Key features, such as the initial and final percentages for one-person and lone-parent households, are properly selected and reported. Data points like the steady rise of one-person households to 12% and the drop in dependent children from 52% to 36% are supported by accurate citations from the table. The information is well-integrated, though a slightly tighter synthesis of the data could extend some comparisons further to meet higher descriptive benchmarks. Overall, the response addresses the prompt logically and presents a clear picture of the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information flows smoothly from the introductory statement to the well-structured overview paragraph, followed by distinct body paragraphs detailing specific data groups. Cohesive devices are used appropriately to guide the reader through comparisons and trends, as seen with phrases like "In contrast", "To begin with", and "Turning to the remaining data". Paragraphing is handled effectively, with each section serving a distinct purpose in grouping related household types. While referencing is generally clear, occasional mechanical transitions slightly limit the fluidity of the structure, preventing it from reaching a higher level of seamless cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The vocabulary used is adequate and shows a sufficient range for the task, allowing for reasonable precision when describing statistical changes. The student successfully incorporates less common lexical items such as "accounted for", "downward trend", and "slight fluctuation". Word choices are generally appropriate for an academic report, though occasional minor infelicities occur, such as "before being constant in 2007" rather than "before remaining constant". Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout, and vocabulary choices do not impede communication. To achieve a more advanced standing, a wider variety of sophisticated synonyms and less common collocations could be integrated to describe trends more creatively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The writing exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating frequent error-free sentences and solid control of overall grammar and punctuation. Complex structures are attempted and managed quite well, such as in sentences incorporating relative clauses and adverbial time markers ("which increased to 11% in 1991 and again rose to..."). Minor grammatical slips occur, such as the missing article in "for lone parent households" or slight awkwardness in phrasing like "in contrast households with dependent children showed..." where a comma would improve punctuation control. However, these infrequent errors do not impede communication, and the grammatical control overall supports a steady, clear narrative.
