Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response achieves a minimal coverage of the task, meeting the word count requirement after discounting copied text. The candidate attempts to present an overview and mention several data points, but the selection of information is incomplete and inaccurate in places. For example, the statement that 'there were no couple in all these years' is incorrect and misinterprets the table's subcategories for couple households with and without children. Furthermore, data is reported in a repetitive and somewhat confused manner, such as stating that 'Dependent children were the most highest household type among the all', without properly contextualising the overall trends across the full time period. To move to a higher band, the writer must select key features more accurately, present a clearer overview of the main trends without factual misinterpretations, and avoid vague generalisations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response demonstrates some organisation, but information and ideas are not arranged coherently throughout. The structure is disjointed, with paragraphs feeling repetitive and lacking a clear overarching progression. For instance, the discussion of dependent children and lone parents jumps back and forth across sentences rather than following a logical sequence of comparison over time. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and repetitively, such as the constant reliance on 'and it went on decreasing' or 'with time', which weakens the flow of the text. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal unity and transitions between sentences require significant improvement to guide the reader smoothly through the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, containing noticeable errors that reflect a lack of precision. There are several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'Britian' instead of 'Britain', 'frfom', 'dependant' instead of 'dependent', 'te' instead of 'the', and the awkward superlative construction 'most highest'. Vocabulary is repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'percentage', 'change', and 'household'. To improve in lexical resource, the candidate needs to expand their range of vocabulary, use less common synonyms for reporting data (such as 'proportion', 'fluctuated', 'declined', or 'rose'), and ensure accurate spelling and word formation throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on repetitive simple and coordinate sentences joined by 'and'. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include missing articles ('the type of household with one person was also comparitively less as from 6% to 12%'), awkward prepositional usage ('percentaged 52%'), and run-on phrasing ('the type of household with one person was also comparitively less as from 6% to 12% among the years.'). Punctuation is also neglected in places, such as missing terminal full stops in several sentences. To progress, the writer must work on mastering basic clause structures, correct prepositional patterns for data, and consistent punctuation.
