Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main pattern that dependent-child households were the largest category and report several relevant changes, including the rise in one-person households from 6% to 12% and lone-parent households from 4% to 12%. The overview also notes that couples without children increased, while dependent-child households declined. However, some comparisons are unclear or inaccurate: one-person households did not remain relatively the same, but rose before levelling off at 12%; and lone-parent households were not the smallest category throughout, since non-dependent children were lower in 2001 and 2007. The figures for couples without children are also presented confusingly. A more precise overview and clearer reporting of the key comparisons would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and paragraphs describing the figures. The sequence from the earlier years to the later years is generally understandable, and phrases such as “By contrast” signal a change in focus. However, progression is weakened by awkward or unclear links, including “However on the other hand” and “By contrast to one family households,” which do not clearly explain the relationship between the categories. Some sentences combine several figures and comparisons, making the information harder to follow. Grouping the categories more consistently and using simpler, more accurate transitions would create a clearer progression and reduce repetition.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant vocabulary for describing data, including “increased,” “decreased,” “rose” and “dropped,” so the main trends can usually be understood. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate, such as “shows in percentage,” “started point,” “hightest,” and “grew only 1 %.” These errors sometimes make the intended comparison less clear. There is also inconsistent naming of categories, for example “one parent households” for the table’s “lone parent” category. Aim for precise, consistent labels and natural collocations for describing proportions and trends. Proofreading spelling and spacing would also improve clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the reader can generally identify the trends being described. However, control is uneven, particularly in longer sentences. The opening sentence lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “one person household had 6%” and “Dependent children percentages began with 52 and 47” have incomplete or awkward constructions. There are also problems with articles, agreement and punctuation, as in “lone parent had the least number of percentages” and the comma-heavy sentence beginning “However on the other hand.” Use complete clauses with a clear subject and verb, and check sentence boundaries and article use. More accurate control of these patterns would make the comparisons easier to read.
