Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify several relevant trends, including the rise in one-person and lone-parent households and the fall in households with dependent children. You also report the main dependent-children figures accurately, from 52% to 36%. However, the response only partially covers the table: it omits the one-person figures and gives little detail about the lone-parent trend. The statement that non-dependent children fell from 10% to 11% is inaccurate; this category rose to 11% in 1991 before ending at 9%. The overview also says the no-children share “has been increased” without giving its clear rise from 19% to 25%. The response is 120 words, below the required 150, which limits the detail and comparisons provided. Add a fuller overview and select accurate figures across the categories.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is a basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph with selected figures. The contrast marker “By comparison” helps signal a shift from dependent-child households to couples without children. However, progression is limited because the final paragraph moves between categories without consistently explaining the comparisons, and the overview repeats trends that are not then fully supported. Some linking is awkward or inaccurate, such as “So” before the non-dependent-children statement, while punctuation around “while” and “in contrast” makes the overview difficult to follow. Organise the body by contrasting the largest decline with the categories that increased, and use clear sentence boundaries and linking phrases to show how each figure supports the overview.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “percentage,” “dependent children,” “lone parent,” and “decline,” so the reader can identify the main subject. However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors make parts difficult to interpret: “house hold,” “protion,” “pecentage,” and “non-independent chilren.” The phrase “living groups one person” is not a natural way to describe the category, and “couple without” leaves the meaning incomplete. Use the table’s labels consistently, such as “one-person households,” “couples with no children,” and “couples with dependent children.” Check spelling carefully and choose precise verbs such as “rose,” “fell,” or “remained stable” rather than relying on repeated, awkward forms of “increase.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer comparisons, but the range is limited and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences hard to understand. For example, “The table illustrate” has subject–verb disagreement, and “the percentage of people living groups one person and lone parent increase” lacks a clear grammatical structure and uses an incorrect verb form. The sentence beginning “but it d percentage falling” is incomplete, while “rose to 19% to 25%” uses an incorrect comparison pattern. Punctuation also causes problems, particularly the lower-case sentence openings after full stops in the overview. Practise accurate basic sentence patterns first, then use controlled comparisons such as “rose from 19% to 25%” and “fell from 52% to 36%.”
