Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify several relevant trends, including the rise in one-person households from 6% to 12%, the fall in households with dependent children from 52% to 36%, and the increase in lone-parent households from 4% to 12%. However, the overview is unclear and partly repetitive, and the final claim that couples with no children are “mostly” living is not supported: this category reaches 25%, while dependent-child households remain the largest at 36% in 2007. The non-dependent-child figure also falls only from 10% to 9%, a small change. The response contains 124 words, below the required 150, so the account is underdeveloped and omits useful comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to figures, so the reader can identify its general purpose. However, progression is limited: the overview and conclusion repeat similar points rather than adding a clear summary, and the data paragraph lists changes without grouping or comparing them systematically. Linking words such as “While,” “However,” and “Consequently” are sometimes used mechanically or do not express the relationship between ideas clearly. For example, “Consequently” does not logically connect the fall in child households to the rise in child-free couples. Organise the body around contrasting trends and use fewer, more precise transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “increased,” and “fell,” and the main household categories are generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are unnatural or imprecise, such as “houses with lone parent,” “negative pattern,” and “mostly couples with no children are living.” Repetition of “households,” “category,” and “increased” also restricts variety. Choose terms that describe the data accurately—for example, “the share of lone-parent households” and “declined”—and avoid vague expressions such as “negative pattern.” More precise collocations would make the comparisons easier to understand.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response communicates its main comparisons, but grammatical errors occur frequently and sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Examples include “The data are given in percentage” and “houses with no children shows increasing trends,” where number agreement and sentence form are problematic. Several sentence fragments begin with “While,” including “While households with dependent and nondependent category showed negative pattern.” Articles and plural forms are also often missing, as in “from 52% to 36” and “the proportion lone parent.” Sentence structures are mostly simple, with attempts at longer clauses that are not consistently controlled. Practise complete sentences, subject–verb agreement, and accurate articles and plural forms.
