Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies the table’s general subject and attempts an overview, noting that dependent-children households were the largest category and that lone-parent households were initially the smallest. However, the overview is inaccurate for the full period: lone-parent households were not the smallest in every year, since one-person households were lower in 1971 and 1981. The report then stops after beginning to describe the dependent-children trend, so it gives no completed comparison or account of the other categories and does not summarise the main changes adequately. The required minimum length is not met, which contributes to the task being addressed only minimally. To improve, complete the trend description and compare key figures, such as the rise in one-person and lone-parent households against the decline in dependent-children households.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an introductory paragraph is followed by an overview and a detail paragraph, with signposting such as “Overall” and “To commence with.” This gives the reader some sense of the intended structure. However, progression is incomplete because the final paragraph ends mid-description, and the response does not move through the table’s other categories or provide a concluding comparison. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly “To commence with,” while the overview’s reference to “all aforementiones years” is unclear. Develop a complete sequence—introduction, concise overview, then grouped comparisons—and use references such as “this figure” only when their meaning is clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response attempts a range of formal vocabulary, including “delineates,” “substantial rate,” and “demonstrated,” and uses relevant terms such as “dependent children” and “lone parent.” However, the range is limited by awkward or inaccurate collocations: “type of houseshold,” “least ratio,” and “with passage of time” do not express the data naturally. Several spelling errors, including “throughtout,” “aforementiones,” and “depenndent,” are noticeable and reduce clarity. Prefer precise, conventional language for describing tables, such as “the proportion of households,” “the largest category,” and “declined steadily.” Check spelling carefully and avoid choosing formal-sounding words when their meaning or collocation is uncertain.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts both longer sentences and shorter statements, including a time phrase at the start of the final paragraph. However, control is uneven, and errors sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to follow. For example, “dependent children type was at substantial rate” lacks a clear grammatical construction and article use, while “lone parent were” has subject–verb disagreement. The sentence beginning “Initially in 1971 there as 52%” is incomplete and contains an incorrect verb form; it also ends without completing the thought. Build accurate basic clauses first—for example, “The proportion of households with dependent children was 52% in 1971”—then add comparisons using controlled complex structures. Proofread agreement, articles, and sentence completion.
