IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the change in some household types in Great Britain from 1971 to 2007.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY

PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The following table provides information about the percentage of people in seven distinct households as well as family categories in Great Britain.

During the time period from 1971 to 2007, the percentage of households and families with dependent children was significantly higher. Furthermore, the proportion of families having lone parent and one person was also noteworthy to be less across the years.

The proportion of household having one person inclined to its double proportion in 2007 compared to that of 1971. One-family households and couple families were not found over the years.

Households having no children were likely to account for a significant proportion that surged to 25% during 2007. Moreover, households having dependent children contributed to a larger proportion in 1971, though it declined to respectively 39% and 36% in 2001 and 2007. However, the proportion of household that possessed non-dependent children also reduced to 9%. By contrast, the number of families having lone parents increased by 12% in 2007.

In conclusion, this table summarizes the overall proportion of these seven family and household categories in Great Britain and mostly all family types remained inconsistent throughout the years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify several relevant categories and report some key figures, including the rise in childless-couple households to 25% and the fall in households with dependent children to 36% by 2007. However, the overview is unclear and sometimes inaccurate: dependent-child households were the largest category in 1971, but their share declined over the period, rather than being “significantly higher” throughout. The statement that one-family and couple households “were not found” is incorrect; the table includes one-family households, with couple subcategories. Some trends are only partly described, such as the increase in one-person households from 6% to 12%. To improve, give a clear overview of the main rises and falls, and compare the starting and ending figures accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to details, and connectors such as “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” and “By contrast” show an attempt to link ideas. However, progression is weakened by unclear or contradictory statements. For example, “one-family households and couple families were not found” interrupts the account and conflicts with the figures discussed later. The final sentence repeats the idea that the table summarizes categories without adding a useful conclusion. Some linking words also suggest relationships that are not clearly explained. Organise the body around the main increases and decreases, and use each paragraph to develop a coherent comparison rather than listing loosely connected observations.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for describing data, including “proportion,” “declined,” “surged,” and “increased.” These choices help communicate the broad direction of several trends. However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural for this task, such as “inclined to its double proportion,” “noteworthy to be less,” and “remained inconsistent.” “Increased by 12%” is also ambiguous when the figure reached 12%; “increased to 12%” would be clearer. Repeated use of “proportion” and “households having” limits flexibility. Aim for precise trend language and natural collocations, while ensuring that the chosen word describes the data accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple statements and attempts at more complex sentences, for example, “Households having dependent children contributed to a larger proportion in 1971, though it declined…” This shows some range, and the main message is generally understandable. However, grammatical control is uneven. In “The proportion of household having one person inclined to its double proportion,” the noun phrase and verb construction are faulty; “the proportion of one-person households doubled” is a clearer pattern. There are also agreement and article problems in “the proportion of household” and “the proportion … reduced.” Review singular and plural forms, articles, and sentence construction, especially when comparing figures across years. More consistently accurate clauses would make the data easier to follow.
