Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify several relevant trends, including the rise in one-person households from 6% to 12%, the fall in households with dependent children from 52% to 36%, and the increase in couples without children from 19% to 25%. However, the overview is incomplete: it does not clearly summarise the main contrast between the declining dependent-children category and the growing categories. There is also a factual error in saying non-dependent children fell by 2%; the table shows a fall from 10% to 9%, or one percentage point. The statement that lone-parent households had the lowest share applies to 1971, not the whole period. The response is 133 words, below the 150-word minimum, and the final comment about “couple” fluctuations is unclear and unsupported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic structure, with an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs, and it attempts to group information by trend. This gives the reader some sense of organisation. However, progression is not consistently clear: the overview combines unrelated points, while the final paragraph shifts from no-children households to an unclear statement about couples. Linking phrases such as “In addition” and “In contrast” are used, but the contrast they signal is not always precise. Some sentences also repeat the same idea or contain unclear references, making relationships between figures harder to follow. To improve, organise the details into clear comparisons and use linking expressions only where the relationship between the trends is explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “percentage,” “proportion,” “dependent children” and “increased,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to interpret. For example, “highest proportion had marked” is not a natural way to describe the largest category, and “a flicutations” does not communicate a clear trend. “Drop fell” is also redundant, while “significant increase” overstates a rise from 6% to 12% without adding useful precision. Aim for accurate, straightforward trend language and use terms such as “percentage points” when describing the size of a change.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, but control is inconsistent, and errors frequently affect clarity. Examples include “The table displays … 1971 to 2007,” which needs a preposition, and “the one person percentage is significant increase,” where the sentence structure is incomplete. In “Dependent children shows were relatively equal,” the subject and verb do not agree and the construction is faulty. There are also problems with articles, tense and punctuation, such as “the the” and missing spaces after commas. Practise building accurate comparison sentences with a clear subject and verb, for example, “The proportion of one-person households rose from 6% to 12%.” Check each sentence for agreement and punctuation.
