Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies the topic and includes one relevant overall trend: people living alone and in lone-parent households increased, while the share of couples with dependent children fell. It also correctly gives 6% for one-person households in 1971 and 52% for couples with dependent children in that year. However, the report is very incomplete: it gives almost no comparisons across the five years and omits several key categories and figures, including the rise in couples without children and the decline in non-dependent-child households. The phrase “the percentage … considerably” leaves the main downward trend unfinished. At 71 words, the response is 79 words below the required minimum, which severely limits its coverage. Include a clear overview and support it with selected start- and end-year figures.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic sequence from an introduction to an overview and then a specific figure, so the reader can identify the intended topic and some main points. However, the response is too short to develop a coherent report, and the ideas do not progress into a meaningful comparison of the table’s categories and years. The opening says “Here, i summarise…” but does not lead into a complete account, while the final sentence introduces a 1971 figure without comparing it with later data. The overview is also incomplete, ending with “considerably.” Organise the response into an introduction, a concise overview, and one or two paragraphs comparing the main trends, using clear links between categories and years.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses some relevant task vocabulary, including “proportion,” “household,” “increased,” and “dependent children,” and the main topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited, with repeated reliance on basic terms such as “people” and “household,” and some expressions are inaccurate or awkward. “The table chart” is redundant, “couple with differrent children” does not clearly describe the category, and “the percentage … considerably” lacks a suitable verb or phrase to express a decline. There is also a spelling error in “differrent.” Use precise category labels from the table and a wider range of trend language, such as “accounted for,” “rose,” “declined,” and “remained stable.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple statements and a longer sentence beginning “Overall,” and the basic meaning of the main trend is partly understandable. However, the range of structures is limited, and errors occur in several short sentences. “Here, i summarise the information and reporting” combines incompatible verb forms; “One person household … is 6% in 1971” has an unsuitable tense and lacks an article; and “the percentage … considerably” is an incomplete clause. Capitalisation is also inconsistent in “i” and “great Britain.” These problems make parts of the report difficult to follow, especially where the trend is left unfinished. Practise complete past-tense sentences, checking that each clause has a subject and a correctly formed verb.
