Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main pattern that households with dependent children were the largest category and note that this share fell, while several other categories rose. However, the response only partially reports the table’s key information, and some details are inaccurate or unclear. For example, lone-parent households rose from 4% to 12%, so saying they showed “not much difference” conflicts with the data. The 1971 figures are also mislabelled: one-person households were 6%, not “one parent,” and the table does not show separate figures for “one-family households and couple.” Your comparison of 1971 and 2007 is useful, but the overview should accurately summarise the major trends and the body should report the categories consistently.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic structure, with an overview followed by paragraphs referring to 1971 and 2007, and words such as “Overall,” “Meanwhile,” and “Moreover” signal relationships between ideas. This gives the reader some organisation. However, progression is not consistently clear because categories are introduced imprecisely and some statements contradict one another, particularly the claim that lone-parent households changed little before noting their increase. The sentence beginning “In 2007, One household type…” is also incomplete, making the comparison harder to follow. Use one paragraph to summarise the overall trends and organise the details by category or by period, with clear references to each household type.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt a range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “sharply decreased,” and “increased over time,” which helps communicate comparisons. However, the range is limited and several word choices or spelling errors make the meaning difficult to interpret. Phrases such as “alternation seen in public households,” “one parent,” and “singlr parent” are inaccurate or unclear in this context; “household types” and “lone-parent households” would be more precise. There are also frequent spelling problems, including “pf,” “higjhest,” and “didnot.” Aim for accurate, standard terms from the table and check spelling carefully. Repeating the exact category labels is preferable to using uncertain alternatives.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a comparison of the starting and ending figures. However, grammatical errors are frequent and sometimes make relationships between ideas unclear. For example, “dependent children dominate all other household” has a tense and agreement problem, while “other household types shows” does not match its plural subject. The sentence “While no children, one person and lone parent increased…” is a fragment, and “there was singlr parent and person has same proportion” combines incompatible structures. Punctuation and spacing around commas and full stops are also inconsistent. Practise complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and use past-tense forms consistently when describing the historical data.
