PEOPLE IN HOUSEHOLDS BY TYPE OF HOUSEHOLD AND FAMILY
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The table below illustrates the change in some households types recorded in Great and shows their percentages classed by each year from 1971 to 2007.
Overall, dependent children recorded as the heighest share of the total of people in households along the periode, followed by the households with no children and non-deoendent children, respectively.
In contrast, lone parent accounted for the smallest share in 1971 and 1981, 1991. while housholds with no children remained stable in 2001 and 2007
Familys with no children experienced a significant increase from 19% to 25% along the periode, followed by one person familys from 6% to 12% similarly to lone parent familys which remained stable at 12% in the last two years the same as one person familys.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify several relevant patterns, including the rise in childless-couple households from 19% to 25% and the increase in one-person households from 6% to 12%. However, the response only partially summarises the table: the fall in households with dependent children, the largest category throughout, is not quantified or completed, and the overview’s ranking of non-dependent children is unclear. The claim that lone-parent households were the smallest in 1991 is inaccurate; one-person households were slightly higher, while lone-parent households reached 10%. The final sentence is also unfinished. The response is 132 words, below the required 150, which limits the detail available. To improve, give a complete overview and report the main changes with accurate comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph with selected figures. This gives the reader some sense of the response’s purpose, and words such as “Overall,” “In contrast,” and “Whereas” attempt to connect ideas. However, progression is not consistently clear. The overview combines rankings with a statement about stability, and the final paragraph shifts between categories without a clear sequence. The last sentence, “Whereas, dependent children familys experienced a significant decrease,” is incomplete and leaves the comparison unfinished. Some linking phrases are also used mechanically or inaccurately. Organise the report around an overview followed by clear comparisons of rising and falling categories, and use complete sentences with explicit references to the relevant years.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses some task-relevant vocabulary, including “share,” “significant increase,” “remained stable,” and “decrease,” so the main trends are generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-form errors reduce accuracy: “heighest,” “periode,” “non-deoendent,” “housholds,” and “Familys.” The repeated use of “familys” is also imprecise because the table reports household types, not simply families. Phrases such as “the total of people in households” and “one person familys” are awkward or unclear. Use the table’s category labels consistently—for example, “one-person households” and “households with dependent children”—and check spelling and collocations. This would make the comparisons more precise and easier to follow.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast introduced by “Whereas” and a comparison using “similarly to.” However, control is inconsistent, and several sentences contain errors that make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. For example, “Overall, dependent children recorded as the heighest share” lacks a suitable verb construction, while “lone parent accounted for the smallest share in 1971 and 1981, 1991” has faulty punctuation and an unclear time sequence. The final “Whereas” clause is a fragment, and the sentence beginning “Familys with no children experienced…” runs several comparisons together without clear grammatical structure. Practise complete sentences, accurate subject–verb patterns, and punctuation around contrast clauses; these changes will help you express the data more clearly.
