Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main pattern that dependent-child households were the largest category and declined, while one-person households increased. You also include several relevant figures, such as 52% falling to 36% and couples without children rising from 19% to 25%. This gives the response a relevant overview and covers the table’s main categories. However, some comparisons are unclear or inaccurate: one-person households began at 6%, not the lowest figure, since lone-parent households were at 4%; and the claim that non-dependent children were stable overlooks their rise to 11% in 1991 before falling to 9%. The final overview sentence is also difficult to interpret. Make the key comparisons more precise and explain the smaller trends clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and a paragraph describing figures. It also attempts to guide the reader with phrases such as “Overall,” “Subsequently” and “Following.” However, progression within the overview and detail paragraph is often difficult to follow because several ideas are compressed into unclear sentences, for example, “The remain of categories occupied intermediate segment few differnce of megnitude.” Some linking words are used mechanically or do not show the intended relationship, and the final sentence repeats the overview without adding a clear conclusion. Group the categories into meaningful comparisons and use simpler, more direct links between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You attempt a range of vocabulary suited to describing data, including “accounted,” “gradually increase,” “falling” and “stablise.” However, inaccurate word choice, collocation and spelling frequently make the meaning hard to recover. For example, “varied categorie noticeable different considerably” does not clearly describe the table, and “significant highest number” is not a natural way to compare values. There are also misspellings such as “verious,” “differnce” and “megnitude.” Aim for accurate, familiar data-reporting language before trying more elaborate expressions. Phrases such as “rose from,” “fell to,” “remained stable” and “the largest category” would communicate the trends more precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, and the response uses some time references to describe change. However, control of sentence structure and verb forms is inconsistent, so several sentences are difficult to understand. For instance, “Dependent children demonstrates larger figure firstly 52%” lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “one person represent initially lowest gradually increase” combines ideas without the necessary verb forms or linking structure. Subject–verb agreement is also inconsistent, as in “categories … occupied” followed by “one person represent.” Use complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check tense consistency when reporting past changes. A wider range of structures will be more effective once these basic patterns are controlled.
