Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You report figures for all five years and most values match the table, including the decline in households with dependent children from 52% to 36% and the rise in lone-parent households from 4% to 12%. However, the overview is not fully accurate: one-person households are not the highest category in 2001 or 2007; dependent-child households remain the largest, despite falling. The overview also focuses on the highest and lowest values for selected categories rather than summarising the main overall changes. Some figures lack the percent sign, and “one children” misidentifies the one-person category. To strengthen the response, give a clear overview of the dominant category’s decline and the increases in one-person, childless-couple and lone-parent households, then select key comparisons rather than listing every value.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview and paragraphs covering the earlier and later years. This helps the reader locate the information. However, progression is weakened by the repeated year-by-year lists, which give similar weight to every figure and do not group the main trends for comparison. Linking phrases such as “First and foremost,” “Furthermore,” and “At least but not last” are repetitive or awkward, and the final paragraph’s “At the end of” does not create a clear analytical conclusion. Improve cohesion by grouping categories with similar trends—for example, rising household types together and dependent-child households separately—and use straightforward transitions that show comparison or contrast.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “dependent children,” and “lone parent,” so the subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several phrases are repeated, especially “the percentage of people in households by type of household and family.” Some word choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “one children” does not describe the table’s “one person” category, while “the one children is 6%” is unclear. There are also spelling errors such as “great britain” and “Additinally.” Use concise, accurate labels from the table and a wider set of trend verbs, such as “rose,” “remained stable,” and “declined,” to make comparisons clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts longer sentences with several linked details, but these structures are often difficult to control. Subject–verb agreement is incorrect in the opening (“The table illustrate”), and many clauses omit articles or use incomplete sentence patterns, as in “the one person is 12%” and “dependent children is 36%.” Commas and spaces around punctuation are also inconsistent, and the repeated use of “and” produces long, loosely connected sentences. These errors sometimes make the relationships between categories and figures harder to follow. Practise accurate simple comparison sentences first, then combine them selectively—for example, “The proportion of one-person households rose from 6% to 12% and then remained stable.”
