Student answer (Band 5.0)

In this paragraph, they are describing the gradual increase and decrease in the percentage of people living in households in Great Britain. However, from the year 1971 to 2007 the percentage of people living in the household in Great Britain has a huge impact on the increase and decrease percentages over time.

In the year 1971 the percentage of peoples living alone is 6% that get increased over time as we can see that the number of percentage goes upto 8% and 11% from year 1981 to 1991. Although the percentage from the year2001 to 2007 remained same at 12%.Moreover, there were couples also living in this household and the couples without children were at 19% in the year 1971, that got increased to 25% till 2007. In addition, the percentage of dependent children decreased from 52% to 36% from year,1971 to 2007 . The percentage of non-dependent children varies between 10 to 11% from year 1971 to 1991 and decreases to 9% in year 2001 and stays same in 2007 also.Lone parent are at the percentage of 4 to 10 % from year 1971 to1991 and increased to 12% in year 2001 and stayed same till 2007.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You report several relevant trends, including the rise in one-person households from 6% to 12%, the increase in couples without children from 19% to 25%, and the fall in households with dependent children from 52% to 36%. These figures are broadly accurate, and the response covers all five categories. However, the opening does not give a clear, specific overview: “a huge impact on the increase and decrease percentages” is vague and does not identify the main pattern, especially the marked decline in dependent-child households. Some details are also imprecise; for example, lone-parent households rose from 4% to 12% overall, rather than simply “4 to 10%” before the later increase. A concise overview and more precise comparisons would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response follows a generally understandable sequence, moving through the household categories, and uses linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “Although.” However, it is presented as one long paragraph, so the overview and supporting details are not clearly separated. The opening repeats the idea of increases and decreases without establishing a useful progression, while the later information is largely listed category by category. Some connectors are awkward or do not show a clear relationship, as in “Although” before the unchanged figure for one-person households. Organise the report into an introduction, a concise overview, and grouped detail paragraphs; use links only where they clarify comparisons or contrasts.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough topic vocabulary to communicate the main categories, including “living alone,” “couples without children,” “dependent children,” and “lone parent.” There is also some variation in trend language, such as “increased,” “decreased,” and “remained same.” However, the range is limited and several phrases are repetitive or imprecise. “Huge impact on the increase and decrease percentages” does not express a clear trend, and “number of percentage” is an unnatural collocation. The repeated use of “percentage” and “increased” also makes the report less concise. Choose precise terms such as “proportion” or “share,” and use trend verbs like “rose,” “fell,” and “levelled off” accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts some complex sentences, including “Although the percentage from the year 2001 to 2007 remained same at 12%,” and most of the intended comparisons can be understood. However, the range is limited, and errors recur in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and punctuation. For example, “the percentage of peoples living alone is 6% that get increased” has an incorrect plural and an awkward relative clause; “Lone parent are” has subject–verb disagreement; and “remained same” is missing an article. Several sentences also run together, with missing spaces after full stops and commas. Practise concise past-tense reporting structures, such as “The proportion rose from 6% to 12% and then levelled off,” and check agreement and sentence boundaries.
