Student answer (Band 6.5)

While this statement is true to some extent, I would have to disagree with it. Tourism does more than what meets the eye. Most of us think that tourism just plays a major role in improving the economy of the world but what there's more to it. Tourism is what helps us meet people from different cultures, backgrounds, values etc. That does not mean that it is specifically destroying our own local culture, It just means that we're getting to learn so much about the other cultures. We get to learn about the way they look at things, their history, their language and so much more. Most importantly, we get to know about their perspective on us and our culture. We get the opportunity to correct them on the things that they are misinformed on about us. We get to tell them about our culture, our history and our way of life. All this does is spread knowledge about different cultures to people across the world. The best part is that when they go back to their home country, they will spread the word to their friends and family as well. As far as environment is concerned, it is our duty to make sure that the tourists are well informed on how we do things and how to keep our environment and culture safe. Whenever I've travelled, I've thoroughly enjoyed talking to people from different cultures, specifically on my pilgrimage visit to Saudia Arabia last year. I got to learn so much about people from different cultures and that increased my knowledge so much and truly changed my perspective on some of those countries because the media had always created a negative image of them in my mind. To sum it up, Tourism should always be promoted as it mostly brings only good things.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed the prompt by taking a clear position, but the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. While you argue that tourism promotes cultural exchange, you largely ignore the environmental concerns mentioned in the prompt, offering only a brief, vague suggestion that tourists should be 'well informed'. To achieve a higher band, you need to provide more balanced, detailed arguments that address both the cultural and environmental aspects of the prompt. Your personal example regarding your trip to Saudi Arabia is relevant, but the essay would benefit from more objective, global examples to support your claims.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is coherent and follows a logical progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and basic. You rely heavily on simple transitions like 'Most importantly' and 'To sum it up'. The paragraphing is also problematic; the entire body of your argument is contained within a single, long paragraph. To improve, you should break your ideas into distinct paragraphs—one for cultural benefits and one for environmental management—and use a wider variety of linking words to connect your sentences and ideas more fluidly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to express your opinions clearly. However, the range is somewhat limited and relies on common, everyday language. There are few attempts to use less common or more sophisticated lexical items. Phrases like 'does more than what meets the eye' and 'spread the word' are idiomatic but slightly informal for an academic essay. To reach a higher band, focus on incorporating more precise, academic vocabulary related to tourism, economics, and environmental sustainability.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is generally clear. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'what there's more to it' (which is redundant) and 'As far as environment is concerned' (missing the article 'the'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though there are some minor errors with comma usage. To improve, aim for more varied sentence structures, such as using conditional clauses or passive voice, and ensure you pay closer attention to articles and subject-verb agreement.
