Student answer (Band 7.5)

The tourism sector plays a vital role in a country’s economic growth, which is the fastest growing industry around the globe. Local cultures and the environment are destroyed by tourism due to the avoidance of local councils or government. I firmly agree with this statement because authorities often prioritize short-term financial gain over environmental sustainability and cultural preservation.

First and foremost, uncontrolled tourists can cause severe environmental problems. This is because many tourists discard plastic waste irresponsibly, which ultimately leads to water and soil pollution. As a result of that, soil fertility and marine life are more likely to be damaged significantly. Moreover, the continuous influx of travellers leads to heavy traffic and excessive energy consumption, which increases the amount of carbon emissions. Consequently, the local temperature rises dramatically, making people feel more uncomfortable. For example, a renowned tourist spot is always busy where excessive vehicles cause severe carbon emissions, which ultimately leads to uncomfortable weather and several breathing problems for humans.

In addition to environmental problems, massive number of foreign travellers negatively impacts local culture. It means that people of touristy spots always witness diverse area’s people. As a result of that, local people are encouraged by their dressing sense and behaviour, followed by local people and ultimately their cultural tradition are in danger of being wiped out. For instance, in many Asian coastal towns, youth locals are increasingly adopting western fashion and behaviour seen in international tourists, which has led to a noticeable decline in the use of traditional clothing during cultural festivals.

In conclusion, although tourism brings some foreign currency and stabilizes the national economy, uncontrolled travelling causes environmental and cultural degradation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas regarding environmental damage and cultural erosion are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of Asian coastal towns. However, the development is somewhat general; the argument could be strengthened by providing more specific, real-world examples rather than hypothetical scenarios. The conclusion is a bit abrupt and does not fully synthesize the main points discussed in the body paragraphs. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the use of cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Moreover', 'Consequently', and 'In addition to' helps guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive (e.g., 'As a result of that' is used twice in close proximity). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The flow is generally smooth, though the final conclusion could be more robust to better summarize the preceding arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey ideas with reasonable precision. There is an attempt to use topic-specific language like 'environmental sustainability', 'cultural preservation', 'carbon emissions', and 'degradation'. While the range is adequate, it lacks the sophistication and idiomatic control required for higher bands. Some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'youth locals' and 'diverse area’s people'. There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary used is appropriate for the context of the task, allowing the message to be communicated clearly without difficulty.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, but there are recurring errors in articles and pluralization, such as 'massive number of foreign travellers' (should be 'a massive number') and 'uncontrolled tourists' (which sounds slightly unnatural). Some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'local people are encouraged by their dressing sense and behaviour', which lacks clarity. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence variety is sufficient for the task.
