Student answer (Band 7.5)

Undoubtedly, tourism plays a significant role in economic development for several countries. I completely agree that the damage caused by tourism to local cultures and the environment is often unconsidered as an increasing number of people who visit these places are doing this under social media influence, whereas the local people are more concerned about making money.

The damage caused by tourism is often ignored as a large proportion of people are visiting famous tourist spots because of social media influence. This is because social media is one of the most important part of modern lives and people do many such things only to post on their social media platforms to show off. As a result, an increasing number of individuals visit famous places without being concerned about the damage they are causing to the environment. For instance, an increased tourism may cause traffic congestion, which results in air and noise pollution and tourists have no or little regard for that.

Along with tourists, the local people are also equally responsible for this damage as they prefer to earn money with influx of tourists instead of preserving their cultures. To expound, tourism influx is a great opportunity for local people to earn money by offering services such as food, accommodation and guidance to the tourists. The local residents can have a stable income with this, so they often ignore the damage they are causing to the environment and local cultures. For example, at many religious places in India, the local residents exploiting the people who are visiting, by asking extra money for religious ceremonies in temples, which creates disbelief among tourists towards their local gods. Hence, they are damaging their own culture for their personal benefits.

To conclude, I completely agree that people have no regard for local cultures and the environment as they are putting their personal interests before everything else.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have clearly addressed the prompt by taking a strong position and supporting it with relevant arguments regarding social media influence and local economic motivations. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the example of religious sites in India, which adds depth to your argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that your conclusion does not merely repeat the introduction but synthesizes the main points discussed. Additionally, while your position is clear, you could further explore the 'environment' aspect, as the focus leans more heavily on cultural impact and social behavior. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices such as 'As a result', 'Along with', and 'To expound' effectively to link your points. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For instance, the link between the first and second paragraphs could be more fluid. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main arguments. To improve, try to vary your linking words to avoid repetitive structures and ensure that the relationship between sentences is always explicit.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas with precision. Phrases like 'social media influence', 'stable income', and 'personal benefits' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'unconsidered' (which is less natural than 'overlooked' or 'ignored') and 'the local residents exploiting the people' (which requires a verb like 'are' or 'tend to'). While you attempt some less common vocabulary, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated academic collocations to elevate the tone of the essay further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'one of the most important part' (should be 'parts') and 'an increased tourism' (should be 'increased tourism' or 'an increase in tourism'). Additionally, the sentence 'the local residents exploiting the people' is a fragment that needs a finite verb. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring every sentence contains a clear main verb.
