Student answer (Band 7.5)
Tourism has become one of the most important economic sources throughout the world, but despite its fast growth, local communities and natural resources can be often overlooked. This essay will discuss why conscious tourism needs to be implemented around the world to preserve the local culture and preserve the environment.
Natural resources are sometimes overlooked when tourism becomes viral. Social media nowadays is heavily impacting the way we interact with the world. A clear example is how a video reviewing a specific place can become viral and attract thousands of visitors. This can be beneficial for businesses and will help them grow economically, but in places where nature is important to preserve, laws need to be implemented to keep resources safe.
In the same way, gentrification due to massive tourism is a reality in many developed countries. Although many visitors can improve the economy of a specific region, there are many places where people from first world countries are moving to, displacing the main culture and the locals. One example of this phenomenon is Mexico city, specially the neighbourhood called "La Condesa"; in the past 5 years many of American citizens have moved to this place, and speaking english has become essential to live and work there. Locals that only speaks spanish, which is the main language in the country, have had to sell their houses and move to different regions, being displaced in their own city.
In conclusion, even though tourism can highly contribute to the economy of a country, it is essential for governments to also maintain the local culture and preserve the natural resources to generate smart tourism.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed the prompt by acknowledging the economic benefits of tourism while arguing for the necessity of 'conscious tourism' to protect local culture and the environment. Your position is clear throughout the essay. The ideas regarding social media's impact on natural sites and the gentrification of Mexico City are relevant and well-supported with specific examples. To reach a higher band, ensure that your conclusion does more than restate the introduction; it should synthesize the main points more effectively. Additionally, while your arguments are sound, further elaboration on how 'conscious tourism' specifically functions would strengthen the development of your ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. You use cohesive devices such as 'In the same way', 'Although', and 'In conclusion' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition from the social media point to the gentrification point is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this phenomenon') is always precise will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'economic sources', 'gentrification', and 'displacing the main culture' are used effectively. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and word-choice issues, such as 'tourism becomes viral' (a trend becomes viral, not tourism itself) and 'first world countries' (which is a dated term). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and idiomatic expressions. The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but more variety in academic phrasing would elevate the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'Locals that only speaks spanish' contains a subject-verb agreement error ('speak' instead of 'speaks') and a relative pronoun error ('who' instead of 'that'). Additionally, 'specially the neighbourhood' should be 'especially'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in capitalization and comma usage. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of relative clauses. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move into the higher band range.
