Student answer (Band 7.0)

In present times, individuals’ dressing styles are profoundly impacted by international fashion trends at multiple levels. The underpinning behind this paradigm is the significant influence of social media which has influenced their lives beyond imagination. In my opinion, although this trend is widely accepted, it has negatively affected valuable local tradition and heritage.

To commence with, global fashion has deeply transformed people’s way of dressing because most of them are mesmerized with the western culture which they constantly observe on social media. Since they want to follow the same western trends which are showcased on the trending platforms by the influencers, they accept the new fashion styles which are prevalent worldwide. Many segments of society attempt to dress the same way as their favourite social influencer or in the ways which are more common in the majority of the world population. To exemplify, the air hostesses of the popular ‘Air India’ flight now wear blouses and pants which are more of western outfits rather than traditional attire like ‘saree’. Hence the above example vividly illustrates how people’s dressing and grooming choices are affected by global trends.

Additionally, while mimicking the global culture, local populace lose the importance of their local culture and traditions, which is an undesirable consequence. Therefore, in my opinion it is a negative development because it is of paramount importance to preserve the local heritage to stay connected to our roots. It is the local dressing style, local food and language which defines its heritage and if we lose any of it we can eventually get disconnected from our local history.

In conclusion, it is evident that international fashion trends have transformed people’s dressing styles owing to considerable impact of social media; nevertheless, in my opinion, it is not a constructive development because it can detach the populace from their valuable cultural heritage.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for a discussion on the impact of tourism on local cultures and the environment. However, the student has written an essay entirely about the impact of social media on fashion trends. While the essay is well-structured and follows the format of an IELTS task, it fails to address the specific topic provided in the instructions. According to the official descriptors, a response that is largely off-topic must be penalised heavily in Task Achievement, as the candidate has not addressed the prompt at all.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

Despite the off-topic content, the essay demonstrates a clear logical progression. The writer uses paragraphing effectively to separate the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Additionally', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the argument. The ideas are logically sequenced, and referencing is clear throughout the text. If the content had been relevant to the prompt, this would be a strong performance in terms of structure and flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and demonstrates a good range. Phrases such as 'profoundly impacted', 'underpinning behind this paradigm', 'paramount importance', and 'undesirable consequence' show an ability to use more sophisticated language. There is a good control of word choice and collocation, and the vocabulary is used with sufficient precision to convey the intended meaning clearly. While there are no highly uncommon or idiomatic expressions, the range is sufficient for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex structures. The writer uses subordinate clauses effectively, such as in 'Since they want to follow the same western trends which are showcased on the trending platforms...' and '...if we lose any of it we can eventually get disconnected...'. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is used correctly. The grammar is controlled, and the few minor slips do not impede communication. The range of structures is sufficient to demonstrate a good command of English grammar.
