Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is undeniable that due to globalization, international travel and the tourism industry have grown massively and play a major role in the modern global economy and society. In this regard, tourism has become one of the fastest-growing industries globally, significantly boosting the economies of many countries. While it generates employment and income, the negative impacts on local cultures and the environment are often overlooked. I agree to a large extent with this notion due to numerous factors which will be outlined in the forthcoming fragments with a logical conclusion.

To commence with, tourism undeniably benefits economies. the first point to consider is that it supports in creating jobs and supporting small businesses. To explain it, tourists often visit different places and explores everything there with high costs of charges as an entry fees and it becomes a tax to government which develops the country to better . For instance, in countries like Thailand and Spain, tourism is a major source of revenue, improving infrastructure and public services. Thus, many countries have created different tourist spots to visit in order to commercialize the tourism and earn huge amount of ransom with it.

Nevertheless, tourism can cause many destruction to native cultures as well as the environment. Firstly, it can lead to erosion of cultures. To elaborate, many popular destinations experience cultural modification, where traditions are altered to serve to tourists. For example, in some regions, sacred ceremonies are performed as a source of entertainment, losing their original meaning. Additionally, the inflow of foreign visitors can lead to cultural break down , where local customs are replaced by globalized practices. This undermines the uniqueness of communities and their heritage. Secondly, the environmental impact of tourism is severe. To exemplify, natural attractions often suffer from pollution, deforestation, and habitat destruction due to overcrowding. A notable example is the damage to coral reefs and several forests in Southeast Asia caused by irresponsible snorkeling and waste disposal. Furthermore, the carbon footprint from transportation, especially air travel, contributes significantly to climate change and increasing global warming rate.

In conclusion, although there are several damages caused by tourism such as overcrowding the cities, deforestations, diminishing the culture, yet importance of tourism in economy can never be neglected at any cost.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, clearly stating your position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout the essay. Your arguments regarding both the economic benefits and the negative impacts on culture and the environment are relevant and well-supported with examples like Thailand, Spain, and Southeast Asian coral reefs. To reach a higher band, ensure that your conclusion does not introduce new phrasing that contradicts your earlier points; for instance, you mention 'overcrowding the cities' in the conclusion, which was not a primary focus of your body paragraphs. Overall, the ideas are well-developed and the position is clear.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Nevertheless', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in their structure. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. To improve, focus on ensuring that the flow between sentences is smoother, as some sentences, such as 'To explain it, tourists often visit different places...', feel slightly disjointed from the preceding claim. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'globalization', 'infrastructure', 'erosion of cultures', and 'carbon footprint'. However, there are some instances of awkward word choice or collocation, such as 'earn huge amount of ransom' (ransom is incorrect here; 'revenue' or 'profit' would be better) and 'supports in creating jobs' (should be 'supports the creation of jobs'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Expanding your use of more sophisticated collocations would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the first point to consider is that it supports in creating jobs' (incorrect verb pattern) and 'tourism can cause many destruction' (should be 'much destruction' or 'a lot of destruction'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization issues, such as starting a sentence with a lowercase 'the'. While you attempt complex structures, the frequency of these minor errors suggests that your control over complex grammar is not yet consistent. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
