IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries and contributes a great deal to economies around the world. However, the damage tourism can cause to local cultures and the environment is often ignored.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 8.5)

The role of tourism within the fabric of contemporary society remains a subject of intense scrutiny. It is frequently asserted that tourism contributes significantly to economies worldwide, yet such a perspective fails to account for the local cultures and the environment. I am of the unwavering conviction that although tourism has a profound impact on the environment and local cultures, it remains a catalyst for stable development around the world.

Undoubtedly, tourism plays an imperative role in today's growing industries and money income of a country. It fosters a wealthy jurisdiction and a better living condition for its citizens. According to the WTTC, travel and tourism contributed a record US$11.6 trillion to global GDP, accounting for roughly 9.8% of the world's total economic output. In addition, tourism also empowers a country to share its cultural identity throughout the world. By welcoming international visitors to historical sites, traditional festivals, and local craft villages, countries can directly showcase their unique heritage.

Proponents of this view may assert that tourism has a far-reaching implications on the environment and local cultures. However, it would be naive to view that way as the envrionmental impact is contigent upon effective management and sustainable policies. When governments implement strict regulations on waste disposal and limit visitor numbers in fragile ecological zones, the negative consequences can be significantly mitigated, allowing economic growth and environmental preservation to coexist harmoniously.

In conclusion, while tourism undeniably exerts pressure on local ecosystems and traditions, its capacity to drive global economic prosperity and foster cross-cultural appreciation far outweighs the detriments. Provided that authorities enforce rigorous sustainable regulations and management strategies, tourism can thrive as a harmonious force for both economic development and cultural preservation.
