Student answer (Band 6.5)
It is often argued that children should begin learning a foreign language at primary school rather than waiting until secondary education. I strongly agree with this view because younger children tend to acquire languages more naturally, while early exposure can also improve their communication skills and cultural awareness.
The primary reason for introducing a foreign language at an early age is that children are generally more capable of absorbing new sounds, vocabulary and grammatical patterns. Unlike older students, they are often less concerned about making mistakes and therefore have more opportunities to practise speaking. For example, a child who is exposed to English through classroom activities, stories and conversations from an early age can gradually develop pronunciation and fluency without feeling excessive pressure. Consequently, starting language education in primary school can establish a strong linguistic foundation that is difficult to achieve through a shorter period of study later in life.
Another significant advantage is that early language education can broaden children’s social and cultural understanding. Learning another language exposes students to different traditions, perspectives and ways of communicating, which can make them more open-minded and comfortable interacting with people from diverse backgrounds. For instance, children who regularly communicate with classmates from different cultural communities may develop greater respect for cultural differences. Furthermore, proficiency in a foreign language can provide academic and professional advantages in adulthood, particularly as international education and employment become increasingly common.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that foreign-language education should begin at primary school. Early exposure enables children to develop linguistic skills more naturally and can also foster cultural awareness and provide valuable opportunities for their future education and careers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 1.0
The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for an opinion on the impact of tourism on local cultures and the environment, but the essay discusses the benefits of teaching foreign languages to children at primary school. Because the student has failed to address the task prompt entirely, this criterion is severely impacted. While the essay itself is well-structured and coherent, it does not respond to the specific question provided in the instructions. In an official IELTS examination, this would be treated as a memorized or irrelevant response, leading to a very low score for Task Response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
Despite being off-topic, the essay demonstrates a high level of coherence and cohesion. The ideas are logically sequenced, with clear paragraphing and effective use of cohesive devices such as 'The primary reason', 'Consequently', 'Another significant advantage', and 'In conclusion'. The progression of ideas is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. The writer shows a strong ability to organize an argument, even though the argument itself does not address the set task.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.0
The vocabulary is precise, varied, and used with a high degree of naturalness. The student employs sophisticated collocations and academic phrasing, such as 'acquire languages more naturally', 'linguistic foundation', 'broaden children’s social and cultural understanding', and 'diverse backgrounds'. There are no noticeable errors in word choice or spelling. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey complex ideas clearly and fluently, demonstrating a level of control consistent with high-band performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures with high accuracy. The writer uses complex sentences effectively, such as 'Unlike older students, they are often less concerned about making mistakes and therefore have more opportunities to practise speaking.' The majority of sentences are error-free, and the control over punctuation and tense usage is excellent. The grammatical complexity is consistent throughout the response, and there are no errors that impede communication or cause confusion for the reader.
