Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary society, tourism has become increasingly prevalent in society. While a segment of people believe that it has a higher impact on community, others strongly oppose this notion. From my viewpoint, I strongly agree with the statement that it offers a multitude of significant disadvantages.

To commence with, the compelling reason for supporting my viewpoint is that the majority of people travel around the world to explore new things. Tourists adopt their cultural values by ignoring their own cultural preferences because they are inspired by the environment and traditions of the new country. Although it broadens their horizon, their local values are badly affected by it. For example, a survey conducted in 2020 showed that 50% of the local country's economy is affected because of tourism, as individuals ignore their heritage, which causes a major downfall in the economy rate.

Another noteworthy justification is that people nowadays are doing business in the tourist industry. They encourage a society to explore foreign living standards and environments, by which people get in a dilemma whether to opt for a new culture or their childhood background because for them, new living standards are more attractive and exquisite, and they ignore their own background. For instance, countries like Turkey or Singapore are some of the most beautiful destinations in terms of tourism and are the reasons for destroying local societies.

To sum up, technologies are revolving around the world, and modern communities have a keen interest to travel and increase their knowledge, but this would lead to a significant impact on their social background by adopting their new styles and neglecting their traditional customs.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position, but the development of ideas is inconsistent. While you identify negative impacts on culture, the supporting arguments are often vague or logically disconnected. For instance, the claim that 50% of a country's economy is affected by tourism because individuals ignore their heritage is not a clear or logical economic argument. Furthermore, the examples provided, such as mentioning Turkey and Singapore as 'reasons for destroying local societies,' lack sufficient explanation or evidence to be convincing. To improve, ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-explained idea that directly supports your thesis, and provide more realistic, logical examples to substantiate your claims.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear topic sentence. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of cohesive devices is repetitive. For example, the transition 'To commence with' is slightly unnatural, and the connection between ideas within the second paragraph is weak, making the argument feel disjointed. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'adopting their new styles,' where it is ambiguous whether 'their' refers to the tourists or the locals. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer to their antecedents would significantly enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'contemporary society,' 'multitude,' and 'exquisite.' However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and awkward collocations that hinder the sophistication of the response. For example, 'economy rate' is not standard terminology, and 'doing business in the tourist industry' is overly simplistic. Additionally, the phrase 'technologies are revolving around the world' is an incorrect use of 'revolving' in this context. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensure that your vocabulary choices are contextually accurate rather than just attempting to use complex-sounding words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, they often contain errors that affect clarity. For example, the sentence 'They encourage a society to explore foreign living standards and environments, by which people get in a dilemma...' is grammatically awkward. There are also minor errors in article usage and prepositional phrases, such as 'in the tourist industry' instead of 'in the tourism industry.' While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining the structure of complex sentences will help improve your accuracy.
