Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate regarding the role of tourism in modern era as it is considered that tourism is one of the rapidly emerging industries and plays an important role in uplifting the economies across the different parts of the world. But on the other hand, tourism is causing damage to local cultures and the environment but this effect of tourism is being ignored. In my opinion, this concern is not of a much importance as the side effects of tourism are often addressed by the authorities.

Before the start of any kind of tour, a tourism company or a person leading a tour usually addresses the participitants to respect the local culture and the environment of a tourist attraction. According to my experience, when I was having a trip towards the northern areas of Pakistan along with my other fellows, our tourist company gave us a detail of the traditions present in these areas and warned us to respect their traditions and not to harm the natural places such as trees, mountains, and rivers there at any cost, otherwise we may face a financial plenty. Furthermore, during our journey, we were asked by various government officials to respect their native cultures and the natural environment there. In case of any negligence, we may face any kind of legal charges.

Moreover, in this era of modern technology, governments usually advertise the roles and principles of tourism through newspapers, social media platforms, websites, and news channels in order to make people aware about the importance of cultures and environment of tourist places and warn their citizens to respect these things there. The availability of high-quality cameras and wireless internet also make it easy for the native people of tourist places to inform the governments about any form of negligence carried out there by a tourist so that a government may take any necessary action to conserve the culture and natural environment of tourist places.

In conclusion, it is stated that there is no need to worry about the potential damage that can be caused by tourists to respective cultures and environment as the governments and various authorities have already designed policies to conserve the culture and surroundings of a natural attraction.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that the negative impacts of tourism are overstated because they are already managed. However, the development is somewhat one-sided. While you provide personal experience and mention government intervention, the argument lacks depth regarding the actual scale of environmental and cultural damage. The essay tends to over-generalize by suggesting that because some measures exist, the problem is effectively solved, which ignores the complexity of the issue. To reach a higher band, you should acknowledge the counter-argument more thoroughly before refuting it, providing a more balanced analysis of why these measures might be insufficient in some contexts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Before the start of', 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in their structure. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though the link between the personal anecdote about Pakistan and the broader global argument could be smoother. Overall, the text is easy to follow, and the logical flow is maintained throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'emerging industries', 'negligence', and 'conserve'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural collocations, such as 'not of a much importance' (should be 'not of much importance') and 'financial plenty' (likely meant 'financial penalty'). While you attempt to use more sophisticated language, some word choices are slightly imprecise. To improve, focus on using collocations more accurately and incorporating a wider variety of topic-specific vocabulary related to environmental sustainability and cultural preservation to enhance the precision of your arguments.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'in modern era' (missing 'the'), 'a detail of the traditions' (should be 'details'), and 'a government may take any necessary action' (article usage). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. You show an ability to construct complex sentences, but the control over articles and prepositions is inconsistent. To achieve a higher band, focus on refining your control over complex structures and ensuring that minor errors in articles and pluralization are minimized through careful proofreading.
