Student answer (Band 6.0)

Tourism is one of the ways a country showcase their culture and beliefs to the world, I disagree with the idea that tourism has caused damage to local cultures instead tourism has announced different cultures to the world. As someone who hasn’t left Nigeria in over 20 years of my life, and when I left for Canada the first place I wanted to visit was Niagara Falls. I have never been to Niagara Falls but I get to know of that place through social media this how tourists help push a country without even knowing it.

In 2023 while I was still working as a tour guide at the Nike arts gallery in Nigeria, I have had a lot of tourists like the place and recommend it for their friends who are planning to visit Nigeria.

Tourism creates employment opportunities for people working in hotels, restaurant's tourist spend money on food, accommodation, transportation which helps boost the local business and also generate revenue for the government. The negative side of tourism is that when tourists travel in numbers to a particular community it tends to disrupt the community even the locals might start to emulate the behaviors of foreigners. Tourist can provide large numbers of waste to the environment which can cause pollution and kill natural habitat.

In conclusion tourism provides important economic opportunities but also has its negative effects on culture and environment. Government and tourism organizations should promote responsible tourism by controlling visitors number, protecting natural areas and educating tourists about local customs.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by acknowledging both the benefits and the drawbacks of tourism. However, the position is slightly contradictory; you state you disagree with the idea that tourism causes damage, yet you later dedicate a paragraph to the negative impacts of pollution and cultural disruption. To improve, ensure your stance is consistent throughout. While you provide relevant personal examples, such as the Nike Art Gallery, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. A more balanced approach would involve exploring the 'extent' of the issue more deeply, perhaps by discussing how management strategies can mitigate these negative effects more thoroughly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For instance, the transition between the personal anecdote about Niagara Falls and the broader economic argument is abrupt. You rely heavily on simple sentence structures, which makes the flow feel a bit disjointed. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in contrast') to connect your ideas more fluidly and improve the overall progression of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'revenue', 'employment opportunities', and 'natural habitat'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'announced different cultures' (likely meaning 'promoted' or 'showcased') and 'provide large numbers of waste' (which should be 'generate large amounts of waste'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and expanding your range of academic vocabulary to avoid repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'a country showcase'), punctuation errors (e.g., 'restaurant's' used as a plural, missing commas in run-on sentences), and awkward phrasing. For example, 'I get to know of that place' should be 'I learned about that place'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to affect the overall fluency of the writing. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammar and punctuation will significantly improve your score.
