Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is considerable debate about whether children should learn how to manage money from an early age. While some people believe that financial education is unnecessary for young children, I strongly believe that teaching basic money-management skills during childhood can prepare them for a more responsible and independent adult life.

On the one hand, those who oppose financial education for children may argue that young people should concentrate primarily on their studies and personal development. Childhood is generally regarded as a period when children should play, socialise and develop their academic abilities rather than worry about financial matters. Furthermore, some parents believe that children are too young to understand complex concepts such as budgeting, saving and investment. They therefore prefer to introduce these ideas when their children are older and more capable of making mature decisions.

On the other hand, learning about money at an early age can have significant long-term benefits. Children who are taught to distinguish between needs and wants are more likely to develop responsible spending habits. For example, parents can give children a small allowance and encourage them to save part of it for something they genuinely want. This simple practice can teach them the importance of budgeting and delayed gratification. Moreover, financial literacy may help young people avoid serious problems in adulthood, such as excessive debt and impulsive spending.

In conclusion, although children should not be burdened with adult financial responsibilities, learning basic money-management skills from an early age is highly beneficial. It can foster independence, self-discipline and financial responsibility, all of which are valuable throughout life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 1.0

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt asks for an opinion on the impact of tourism on local cultures and the environment, but the student has written an essay about whether children should learn how to manage money. As the response fails to address the task prompt entirely, it cannot be assessed for task achievement in relation to the specific question asked. While the essay itself is well-structured and coherent, it does not fulfil the requirements of the task provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is well-organised with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The progression of ideas is logical, and the student uses a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points of view. Despite the content being irrelevant to the prompt, the internal structure and flow of the text are of a high standard.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The student demonstrates a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic essay. Phrases such as 'considerable debate', 'financial literacy', 'delayed gratification', and 'impulsive spending' are used accurately and naturally. The vocabulary is varied and precise, showing a good level of control over word choice and collocation. There are no significant errors in spelling or word formation that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'While' clauses and relative clauses (e.g., 'Children who are taught...'). The grammar is generally accurate throughout the text, with very few errors. Punctuation is used correctly to support the flow of ideas. The majority of sentences are error-free, demonstrating a strong command of English grammar.
