Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the negative impacts of tourism on culture and the environment. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of the argument. While the position is clear, the ideas are under-developed. For instance, the discussion on Nepalese culture and environmental destruction is brief and lacks the necessary elaboration to fully support the extent of the agreement. The failure to meet the word count requirement is a major constraint on the development of the response, preventing it from reaching a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed. While some cohesive devices are used, such as 'Similarly' and 'In stark contrast', they are sometimes used incorrectly or do not effectively link the arguments. The transition between the cultural impact and the environmental impact is abrupt. Furthermore, the concluding paragraph does not effectively summarize the main points or provide a final thought, making the overall structure feel incomplete. The referencing is occasionally unclear, which hinders the flow of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and sophistication. There are several instances of awkward word choices or non-standard collocations, such as 'touring industry', 'touristry industry', and 'fluence of western civilization'. The phrase 'modern touristry contributed harshly' is also unnatural. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary, the lack of control over these terms limits the effectiveness of the communication. A wider range of vocabulary and more accurate word choice would be required to achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'the way the foreigners shares their perspectives decline in the value', 'The system of dressings... are all been adopted', and 'The rites and rituals that has been performed'. Subject-verb agreement and tense consistency are recurring issues. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevents the response from demonstrating a higher level of control.
