Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt regarding the economic benefits of tourism versus the damage it causes to local cultures and the environment. However, the position is not always entirely clear due to confusing reasoning, such as claiming that tourists from third-world economies do not understand local cultures but simultaneously arguing that culture cannot be destroyed because it is deeply ingrained. Ideas are limited and under-developed, with a heavy reliance on sweeping generalisations rather than sustained, logical support. While the student does touch upon both parts of the prompt, the development lacks depth and structure, aligning best with a Band 5 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The entire response is written as a single, massive run-on paragraph without any division into introductions, body paragraphs, or a conclusion. There is a complete lack of paragraphing, which significantly impedes the logical organisation and progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are largely absent or misused, relying instead on endless comma splices and run-on sentences (e.g., 'ON THE OTHER HAND THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION...'). While there is a loose progression of thoughts from economic importance to cultural impact and finally environmental impact, the severe lack of punctuation and structural formatting makes it very difficult to follow, earning a Band 4.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and often imprecise. The student frequently repeats words such as 'TOURISM', 'CULTURE', and 'COUNTRY' within very short spans. There are also notable lexical errors and inappropriate word choices, such as 'cultural power', 'super country', and 'honourabely disagreed'. The limited and repetitive range of vocabulary, combined with frequent word-choice errors and a lack of control over collocation, matches the descriptors for Band 4.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The writing suffers from severe punctuation issues, specifically the complete lack of periods, commas, or capitalisation control, as the entire text is presented in capital letters without standard sentence boundaries. There is a very limited range of grammatical structures attempted, and sentences are overwhelmingly fused together incorrectly. Frequent errors in tense, subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'THEY TOTALLY DEPENDENT', 'THEIR ECONOMY RUNS'), and awkward syntax cause considerable difficulty for the reader and distort meaning, placing this clearly at Band 4.
