IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries and contributes a great deal to economies around the world. However, the damage tourism can cause to local cultures and the environment is often ignored.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often believed that tourism is one of the fastest growing industries and provides a great support to economies throughout the world, whereas the damage caused by it to local cultures and environment is often ignored. I completely agree with this view because economies of many countries are sustained due to the tourism industry and governments mostly ignore the destructions happened due to a large number of tourists.

Undoubtedly, tourism plays a significant role in uplifting the economy of a country. The country with more historical and monumental tourist attractions has a great chance of becoming the developed country because it may easily earn an immense amount of money through it. People having a profound desire of exploring the world often visit different countries in the world. As they may have an urge to gain information about various cultures and traditions of particular regions to broaden their knowledge, it leads them visit wider range of countries. This concept primarily helps goverments to earn more money by allowing visitors to explore their countries. For example, the growth of economy rises due to a large number of tourists in the state which pay a substantial amount of money to visit and accomodate in that country.

Having said that, governments often ignore the problems arise due tourism in the country that may affect the local cultures and environment. When governments generate better revenue and find tourists a good source of income, they even disregard the issues caused by visitors. Basically, local customs and traditions may gradually be changed to satisfy the foreigners, that come to visit that culture. Therefore, the original meaning of these traditions can be lost. In addition, tourism can also badly affect the environment. For example, tourists increase demand for water, energy, land and transportation, especially in sensitive areas, and they also increase traffic which can damage natural habitats. But governments do not pay any focus to these major problems just because of the large amount of revenue they get from visitors.

In conclusion, although toursim support the economy of a country by providing a substantial income, it also causes several disadvantages to local cultures and environment.
