Student answer (Band 6.0)

Tourism is a great blessing for many places in the world but some people may consider it a threat to local culture and environment. From my perspective, tourism comes with a lot of benefits but it is very important to respect and conserve both local culture and environment of tourist spots.

Tourism has great benifits especially for the local population and industries. Tourism contributes a lot in world economies especially iin countries like the Phillipines, Egypt, Thailand etc. It keeps local industries running in tourist places like northern Pakistan. It provides recognition to countries on global level. It introduces local culture and industries to people across the world. It provides employment to a large number of locals.

In contrast to the advantages, tourism comes with a lots of disadvantages like damage caused to local culture and environment. It has been observed on various occasions that tourists do not respect local culture and cause damage to cultural infrastructure. The most recent example of this is the video circulating over the internet in which an indian man is seen climbing the to top of a stupa in Nepal which was considered disrespectful by the locals. Tourists often visit places and leave their garbage behind them which ruins the beauty of that place for example fairy meadows in Pakistan.

In conclusion, the positive side of tourism is often glamourized it but the negative sign needs attention. On the other hand lack of civic sense in a few poeple can not be used to justify that tourism is a bad thing. Nowadays people are getting more and more concerned about this problem and they have started calling out the tourists for their actions which many tourists consider to be racist or hostile. People should respect the local culture while visting a place and should carry their trash with them. Moreover, the government should take a few steps to prevent the tourists from ruining and tourist spot like introducing fines or making it compulsory to visit only with a local tour gide.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the economic benefits of tourism and its negative impacts on local culture and the environment. You present a clear position from your perspective in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. The ideas are supported by relevant examples, such as the mention of the Philippines, Egypt, and Thailand for economic contributions, as well as specific instances like the stupa incident in Nepal and Fairy Meadows in Pakistan. However, some body paragraphs present a rapid sequence of short, somewhat underdeveloped points rather than fully elaborated arguments. To reach a higher band, these supporting points could be expanded with deeper explanation and analysis. Nevertheless, the task is successfully and comprehensively addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas. You have effectively used paragraphing to separate the introduction, the economic benefits, the cultural and environmental disadvantages, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'In contrast to the advantages', 'The most recent example of this', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through your arguments. However, referencing and cohesive links are sometimes a bit mechanical or repetitive, particularly in the second paragraph where several sentences begin abruptly with 'Tourism' or 'It provides'. Improving the variety of transition words and ensuring smoother inter-sentence transitions would enhance the flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task and allows you to communicate your ideas clearly. You demonstrate attempts at less common vocabulary items and phrases, such as 'cultural infrastructure', 'civic sense', and 'glamourized'. However, there are some spelling errors ('benifits', 'iin', 'Phillipines', 'visting', 'gide') and minor word-form or collocation slips, such as 'climbing the to top' and 'negative sign' instead of 'negative side'. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect a Band 6 level where vocabulary control is generally adequate but lacks the precision, flexibility, and rare error-free usage required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the essay, utilizing subordinate clauses and conditional structures appropriately. There are several error-free sentences, such as 'From my perspective, tourism comes with a lot of benefits but it is very important to respect and conserve both local culture and environment of tourist spots.' However, a number of grammatical and punctuation errors persist, including missing articles ('ruining and tourist spot' instead of 'ruining a tourist spot'), run-on phrasing in complex sentences ('the positive side of tourism is often glamourized it'), and occasional preposition errors. These errors occur frequently enough to prevent the grammar score from reaching the Band 7 threshold, but they rarely impede overall communication.
