Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the contemporary world, tourism has seen a rapid increase compared to other industries and is contributing significantly to the world ecenomy. Although tourism can foster businesses run by the natives, I firmly agree that the damage to the local customs and environment caused by tourism is often overlooked.

First and foremost, the local cultures of tourist places can be blurred by the culture of visitors. Large number of outsiders visiting tourists places can practice their own culture there, subesquently, the younger generation of locals can be influenced by the tourists and would be encouraged to adapt their cultures. As a result, the local customs will be blended with the foreign cultures. Dressing sense of tourists, for instance, can fascinate to the locals and they would start liking foreign dress over their cultural attire. Growth of tourism, therefore, can affect the local customs.

Furthermore, rapid increase of tourism can have detrimental effect on the local climate. Picnic and hiking are the most common activities among tourists, and they can leave their leftover behind, which can litter the tourist places. Besides, use of motor vehicle used by the outsiders for transport purposes would be increased in tourist areas. The emission of greenhouse gas, consequently, would be increased and pollute the climate in tourist places. Hence, the growing number of visitors at tourist spots can affect the local environment.

In conclusion, despite contributing significantly to the world economy and local businesses, I large believe that the damage to the local cultures and environment caused by the rapid increase of tourists should not be ignored.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response effectively addresses the prompt by clearly presenting a position that tourism damages local cultures and the environment, which is often ignored. The writer covers all parts of the task well, providing relevant arguments in separate body paragraphs. In the first body paragraph, the impact on local customs is explored through the blending of foreign behaviors and dressing sense. In the second body paragraph, environmental concerns such as littering and greenhouse gas emissions are discussed. The ideas are generally well-developed and supported with logical explanations and examples, such as the dressing sense of tourists. The conclusion clearly restates the writer's stance. The response aligns well with the Band 7 descriptor, as all parts of the task are addressed with a clear position throughout, and ideas are extended and supported, despite some minor over-generalizations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. The introduction successfully sets up the background and outlines the writer's stance. Each body paragraph has a clear central topic sentence, starting appropriately with 'First and foremost' and 'Furthermore'. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'As a result', 'for instance', and 'Hence', though there is a slight mechanical feel at times. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate the introduction, two distinct body arguments, and the conclusion. Referencing is generally clear, contributing to an overall coherent arrangement that meets the criteria for Band 6.5 to Band 7.0. Given the consistent logical flow, it comfortably earns a Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'contemporary world', 'significantly', 'subsequently', and 'detrimental effect'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and spelling. For instance, 'ecenomy' is misspelled, 'Large number of outsiders' misses a plural article, and phrases like 'can fascinate to the locals' and 'I large believe' contain awkward phrasing and grammatical word-form errors. Despite these lexical slips, the vocabulary used is sufficient for the reader to understand the intended meaning without significant strain, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'Although tourism can foster businesses run by the natives, I firmly agree that...' and 'Picnic and hiking are the most common activities among tourists, and they can leave their leftover behind...'. However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('use of motor vehicle used... would be increased') and missing articles ('Dressing sense of tourists'). While these errors are noticeable and detract from precision, they rarely impede overall communication. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.
