Student answer (Band 8.0)
The rapid expansion of the global hospitality sector has transformed it into a cornerstone of macroeconomic growth for countless nations. While it is undeniable that tourism fuels infrastructure development and creates employment, I completely agree with the assertion that its devastating impacts on native cultures and the fragile environment are frequently overlooked or minimized by both governments and commercial entities.
The primary reason why the cultural damage caused by tourism is often ignored is that financial metrics tend to overshadow social consequences in policy planning. As mass tourism commercializes local communities, unique cultural practices are frequently diluted or trivialized into shallow performances to entertain foreign visitors. This phenomenon, often referred to as cultural commodification, strips sacred traditions or authentic art forms of their historical meaning. For instance, in many culturally rich destinations throughout Southeast Asia, traditional rituals and indigenous crafts have been modified into cheap, assembly-line spectacles for tourist consumption. Despite this erosion of heritage, the disruption is routinely ignored by local authorities because the influx of foreign currency helps alleviate immediate regional poverty.
Equally marginalized is the severe ecological toll levied by rapid, profit-driven tourism development. Pristine natural landscapes are systematically cleared to make way for massive hotel complexes, cruise ship terminals, and transportation networks. This infrastructural sprawl routinely causes severe habitat fragmentation, water pollution, and unsustainable waste accumulation in areas ill-equipped to handle it. In many fragile ecosystems, like the coral reefs of the Caribbean or the alpine trails of the Himalayas, the sheer volume of foot traffic and carbon emissions from tourist transportation degrades the environment at an irreversible rate. Yet, because these destinations rely heavily on tourist revenues to balance their national accounts, the long-term ecological destruction is brushed aside in favor of short-term fiscal returns.
Ultimately, this collective ignorance stems from the systemic challenge of quantifying environmental and cultural degradation in traditional economic balance sheets. A government can instantly calculate the exact revenue generated by thousands of airline arrivals and hotel bookings; however, putting a precise monetary value on a lost local dialect, an eroded coastline, or a disrupted wildlife migration path is incredibly difficult. Consequently, until alternative sustainability indices are actively integrated into national planning, economic priorities will continue to overshadow and conceal the profound socio-environmental costs of global travel.
In conclusion, while the financial advantages of tourism are highly conspicuous and easily measured, the corresponding damages to local heritages and natural habitats are deeply severe and systematically downplayed. To protect the global commons, it is imperative that future tourism models transition from unrestricted economic growth toward strict, ecologically bounded sustainability.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt with a well-developed and clear position throughout. The writer explicitly agrees with the statement in the introduction and systematically explores both cultural and environmental dimensions of tourism's negative impacts. Each body paragraph is thoroughly supported with relevant explanations and specific examples, such as reference to cultural commodification in Southeast Asia and ecological degradation in the Caribbean and Himalayas. The conclusion neatly ties the arguments together. The ideas are extended smoothly without over-generalization. This performance fully meets the Band 8 descriptor for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently linked, making the flow of the argument seamless. Paragraphing is used skillfully, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct sub-topic, such as cultural damage followed by environmental harm. Cohesive devices, including phrases like 'The primary reason why,' 'Equally marginalized is,' and 'Ultimately,' are used flexibly and naturally without feeling mechanical. Reference and substitution are well managed, ensuring clarity of meaning from sentence to sentence. This meets the criteria for a strong Band 8.
Lexical Resource: Band 8.0
The student exhibits a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic context. Advanced and uncommon lexical items such as 'macroeconomic growth,' 'cultural commodification,' 'habitat fragmentation,' and 'socio-environmental costs' are used skillfully and accurately. Word choice and collocations are generally precise, reflecting a strong command of register. Although there are minor stylistic choices that are standard rather than exceptional, the control over vocabulary is robust and natural. This easily satisfies the criteria for Band 8.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0
The essay displays a wide range of complex structures used with a high degree of accuracy. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the writer demonstrates excellent control over subordinate clauses, passive forms, and conditional-like phrasing (e.g., 'Consequently, until alternative sustainability indices are actively integrated...'). Punctuation is used correctly throughout. Only occasional, very minor slips might occur, but these do not impede communication in any way. This level of syntactic flexibility and control strongly aligns with Band 8 descriptors.
