Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing the economic benefits of tourism alongside its negative impacts on local cultures and the environment, thereby taking a recognisable stance. Ideas are presented, such as women's employment, online shopping trends for local specialties, and environmental damage caused by waste like plastic. However, the development of these ideas is frequently limited and lacks deep analytical extension. For example, the mention of the friend visiting Khulna and buying spice acts as a personal anecdote, but the link back to the broader prompt question about the extent of agreement is somewhat loose. Furthermore, some ideas are over-generalised or slightly unclear, particularly regarding children adopting bad habits from tourists. Overall, the response addresses all parts of the task with sufficient relevance, aligning best with the Band 6 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into four paragraphs, following a standard introduction, body, and conclusion structure, which provides a coherent overall arrangement. However, referencing and logical transitions between sentences are frequently faulty or mechanical. For instance, transitional phrases like 'By doing this' and 'this things' lack clear antecedent cohesion, making the flow somewhat disjointed. The paragraphing is visually present, but internal cohesion within paragraphs lacks seamless progression. There is also a lack of advanced cohesive devices, leading to choppy sentence structures. While the reader can follow the general trajectory of the argument, the mechanical and repetitive use of basic cohesive links places this response firmly at Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully incorporating topic-related words such as 'industries', 'economic system', 'handmade product', and 'traditional spice'. However, there are numerous noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation, such as 'Now days' instead of 'Nowadays', 'adoptable habits' instead of 'adoptable behaviours', 'sprade' instead of 'spread', 'touriest' instead of 'tourist', 'dengorus' instead of 'dangerous', and 'caulture' instead of 'culture'. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reveal a limited and fragile control of lexical items. While the writer attempts less common vocabulary, the high frequency of inaccurate word forms prevents the score from reaching a higher band, making Band 5 an appropriate evaluation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting primarily of simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex clauses. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('tourism industries takes', 'plastic management sholud me emplement strictly'), incorrect prepositions, and pervasive punctuation and capitalization errors. For example, 'If tourist ands to buy the things again they orderd it online this things add a new industry' demonstrates a complete breakdown in clause structuring and run-on phrasing. Because errors are dense and frequently impede communication, requiring the reader to decode the intended meaning, the grammatical accuracy and range align with Band 4 descriptors.
