Student answer (Band 6.0)

Tourism is one of the fastest growing business and produce a great deal to economics around the world. However, tourism can cause damage to environment and local cultures which is often ignored. Overall, I am largely agreed with that the damage caused by tourism to atmosphere and local cultures are often ignored.

Now, turning to the details, Tourism affects local culture, the main reason of that people commercialized their businesses for the profit to satify the visitors which reduced the beauty of local shops. In addition, young people may adopt foriegn lifestyle and gradually lose interest in local culture. For example, the local culture festival mainly focus on selling sovenirs and satisfy visitors than preserving its original meaning.

Furthermore, Tourism also affects environment, the main reason for that more tourists mean more waste and pollution. Moreover, hotels consume large amount of water and electricity which cause deficiency of resources for local people. For instance, popular tourists places such as Beaches can suffer from plastic waste which affects the marine life, while natural resources can be damaged by excessive visitors.

To conclude, the conclusion is that Although tourism contributes a great deal to economics, I largely agreed that tourism has a more negative effects such as damage local culture and environment. Government can ensure that tourism remains economically beneficial while protecting local communities and the environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position agreeing that the damage caused by tourism is often ignored, supporting this view with points on local culture and the environment. However, important length and development limitations prevent a higher score, as the essay falls below the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, sitting at 225 words. Consequently, while main ideas are introduced, some points remain under-developed or briefly stated, such as the example of local cultural festivals or beach pollution, which lack deeper elaboration. To reach the next band, the writer needs to ensure the full word count is met and extend the supporting examples with more thorough explanations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas across paragraphs, meeting the core requirements of this band while showing glimpses of the next. Each paragraph has a clear focus, moving from an introduction to culture, environment, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal shifts, such as 'Now, turning to the details,' 'Furthermore,' and 'To conclude,' though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in their phrasing. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate the distinct arguments. To fully secure a higher band, the writer should employ a wider and more natural variety of cohesive links without relying on predictable transitional formulas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the main points about tourism, economics, and environmental impact. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'commercialized,' 'deficiency,' and 'excessive,' but these are sometimes accompanied by word choice or collocation inaccuracies, such as 'produce a great deal to economics' instead of 'contribute a great deal to economies,' or 'satify' and 'foriegn' which reflect spelling slips. The range is sufficient to allow the message to come across clearly despite these limitations. To move up, the writer needs to expand their range of less common lexical items and improve control over word forms and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses introduced by 'although,' 'which,' and 'such as.' However, there are noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text, such as issues with subject-verb agreement ('the damage... are often ignored'), missing articles ('damage to environment'), and awkward verb structures ('young people may adopt foriegn lifestyle'). Despite these errors, meaning is rarely impeded, and the sentence structures remain comprehensible. To achieve a higher band, the writer must increase the proportion of error-free sentences and exercise tighter control over basic agreement and article usage.
