Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that in recent times tourism has contrbuted to cause some significant damage to local culture and environment. Inspite of that, It continues to remain one of the fastest growing industries in the world even contributing large proportions to the national incomes of some countries.

Tourists often visit new places for enjoyment , fun and to relax from thier daily lives. However , various incidents have been recorded where tourists have created a lot of problems for the locals. These incidents include littering of tourist sites and sometimes even destruction of public property in those places. Their activites may create a lot of noise sometimes which disrupts the peace of the Locals.

However, tourism also contributes to local businesses and generates various employment opportunities for the locals, hence contributing towards the local economy. While , all of this comes with a price that the locals have to pay. For example, infrastructure development in tourist areas often leads to the destruction of natural environment of that place, in the end locals of the area have to suffer. Hence the problem should not be ignored neither tourism should stop. Some steps should be taken by local communities, to ensure that overall experience remains acceptable for both tourists and themselves.

In some places, local have taken measures like imposing a tourist tax , limiting the number of tourists visiting in a day. For example, the city of Barcelona charges a small amount of tax from tourists. This money is later used for the maintenance of tourist sites in the city.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your response addresses the topic and presents a broadly balanced position: tourism can harm local communities and the environment, but it should be managed rather than stopped. Relevant examples include littering, damage to public property, noise, infrastructure development, and Barcelona’s tourist tax. This fits the criterion because the main ideas are relevant, but some are more fully explained than others. The environmental point is mentioned without showing clearly how development damages a particular habitat, while the tax example explains maintenance but not how it limits harm or benefits residents. State your degree of agreement more explicitly in the introduction and develop each main claim with a clear explanation or specific example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, discussion of negative effects, a paragraph balancing economic benefits against costs, and a final example of a management measure. This logical progression meets the lower-band expectations and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, the final paragraph feels somewhat detached because the essay ends after describing Barcelona’s tax, without a concluding sentence that reconnects the example to your position. Linking phrases such as “However” and “For example” help guide the reader, but “While” at the start of a sentence is awkwardly connected to the preceding point, and “Hence” is used repeatedly. Improve cohesion by making the relationship between each paragraph explicit and adding a concise conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “employment opportunities,” “infrastructure development,” “tourist sites,” and “maintenance.” These choices make the discussion relevant and generally easy to understand. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “imposing a tourist tax” and “limiting the number of tourists.” At this level, however, some spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “contrbuted,” “Inspite,” “thier,” and “activites” are misspelled, while “national incomes” is less natural than “national income.” Some phrases are also broad, such as “a lot of problems” and “some steps.” Proofread spelling and choose more precise expressions to describe the scale and type of tourism’s effects.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “incidents … where tourists have created a lot of problems” and a conditional-style purpose construction in “to ensure that overall experience remains acceptable.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors are present. For example, “While, all of this comes with a price” is an incomplete, awkwardly punctuated clause, and “neither tourism should stop” does not fit grammatically after “the problem should not be ignored.” Articles are also missing in “that overall experience” and “destruction of natural environment.” Review clause connections, article use, and punctuation, and check that longer sentences express complete, clearly linked ideas.
