Student answer (Band 5.5)

Tourism is attractive and it is rising rapidly. It is argued by some people that tourism is increasing day by day and it consumes a high amount throughout the world. Many people are of the view that tourism can cause damage to the culture and environment of visited countries which is neglected by some people. I completely disagree with this view because tourism enhances knowledge of human beings. In this essay, I will give certain reasons of my disagreement.

First of all, tourism provides us with knowledge of other countries' culture and traditions. For example, if a Pakistani takes a trip to England, he will get to know the culture, traditions, food, style and way of living and of english people. Moreover, what he likes about that country, he can implement it in his own life.

Secondly, tourism provides a person with the fascinating and beautiful scenery throughout the world. A tourist can enjoy the beautiful views of nature found in all over the world which helps people in relaxing and distressing mentally and also physically. For instance, a tour can be a short break from stressful and exhausting routine for many people.

Further, as far as the problem of damage which people can cause to the culture and environment of the places is concerned, there is no surety in this. Tourism can hardly get damage to the culture otherwise it provides people with reason and knowledge.

To conclude, people can get benefit by visiting other countries or places instead of damaging the environment of them. Although tourism involves cost consumption, it is significantly beneficial for individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

Your position is clear in the introduction and conclusion: you disagree that tourism’s harms are ignored or significant, and you give relevant points about cultural learning and recreation. However, the response only partly addresses the central issue of damage to local cultures and the environment. The first two body paragraphs explain benefits to tourists, rather than showing why tourism does not cause the harms described. The paragraph beginning “as far as the problem of damage” makes a direct claim, but “there is no surety in this” is unclear and is not supported with a specific example or explanation. To strengthen the response, address environmental and cultural effects directly, acknowledge possible harms, and support your position with developed examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate body paragraphs and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “First of all,” “Secondly,” and “To conclude” help readers follow the main stages. The overall arrangement is coherent, but progression is weakened because the first two body paragraphs focus on benefits to individuals, while the task asks about damage to local cultures and the environment. Some links are also mechanical, and the reference in “what he likes about that country” is not developed into a clear connection to your argument. Organise the body around the task’s two concerns, and use linking sentences to show how each example supports your position rather than relying mainly on signposting phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “culture and traditions,” “beautiful scenery,” “environment,” and “stressful and exhausting routine.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make ideas unclear. For example, “it consumes a high amount throughout the world” does not clearly express what tourism consumes, while “tourism can hardly get damage” is an inaccurate way to describe harm. “Distressing mentally” also does not convey the intended idea of relieving stress. Aim for more precise expressions for economic contribution, environmental impact and cultural change, and check that verbs naturally combine with their objects. This would make your argument easier to understand and more appropriately academic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including conditional forms such as “if a Pakistani takes a trip to England, he will get to know…” and a concession beginning “Although tourism involves…”. Meaning is generally recoverable, but errors occur in sentence construction and grammatical patterns. For example, “which is neglected by some people” has an unclear reference, and “tourism can hardly get damage to the culture” uses an incorrect verb pattern. The sentence about a tourist enjoying views “found in all over the world” also has a faulty prepositional construction. Review verb patterns, articles and prepositions, and proofread punctuation and spacing, as in “food, style.” More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
