Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is widespread debate about the rapid growth and benefits of tourism to the economies around the globe. Although, it also has some bad effects on the environment and culture, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. I strongly believe that tourism should be promoted and goverments should facilitate it.

First and foremost, tourism builds international relations. Tourists from different countries visit and understand other countries' culture. As a result, people from different parts of the world get familar with our traditions and customs. Additionally, people visit monuments and tourist destinations and it gives us international recognition. For example, a lot of influencers and content creators travel to different countries to explore culture and upload videos about their experience on YouTube and these videos are watched around the world.

Futhermore, it increases business and employment opportunities because hotels are build at tourist destination. Services are also maintained in these remote areas to accomodate tourists. Enterpreneurs get chance to start business and also create jobs in the market. This generates international revenue as tourists have to use local services for their accomodation, travel and food. For instance, many hotel chains are functioning in Hunza, a tourist attraction in Pakistan, and foreigners stay and use its services which brings money to the country and becomes a source of economy growth.

To conclude, tourism has both negative and positive sides. It causes damage to the environment but provided that it has many advantages for the econmonies, I believe it should be promoted and the authorities should carefully use the revenue for the protection of the environment and preserving local culture.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you acknowledge harm to culture and the environment but argue that tourism’s benefits outweigh its drawbacks. The discussion of international understanding and employment is relevant, and the Hunza example gives the economic point a specific context. However, the task foregrounds damage to local cultures and the environment, while your response mainly develops tourism’s benefits. Cultural harm is not explained, and environmental damage is mentioned only briefly in the conclusion, so these parts are addressed less fully than the economic case. To strengthen the response, explain specific harms—such as pressure on local customs or pollution—and weigh them directly against the benefits, using examples to support your judgement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate benefits, and the conclusion restates your position. Sequencing is easy to follow, and signposts such as “First and foremost,” “Furthermore,” and “To conclude” help readers track the argument. The examples are placed alongside the points they illustrate. Some links between ideas are less smooth, however: the move from international recognition to influencers’ videos is abrupt, and the conclusion introduces the idea that authorities should use revenue to protect culture and the environment without developing it earlier. Build clearer connections between claims and examples, and make the body paragraphs reflect the full balance of your argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of relevant topic vocabulary, including “international relations,” “monuments,” “employment opportunities,” and “international revenue,” which makes the main ideas clear. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “tourist attraction” and “local services.” However, several spelling errors—“goverments,” “familar,” “Futhermore,” “accomodate,” “Enterpreneurs,” and “econmonies”—reduce accuracy. Some phrases are also imprecise or unnatural, including “builds international relations,” “it gives us international recognition,” and “becomes a source of economy growth.” Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; this will make your vocabulary more precise without requiring unnecessarily complex words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “Although … the benefits outweigh the drawbacks” and a conditional phrase in “provided that it has many advantages.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, and the paragraph structure helps maintain clarity. Some grammatical errors remain. “Although” is incorrectly followed by a comma and a complete clause in the opening; “hotels are build” needs a passive verb form; and “it gives us international recognition” has an unclear pronoun reference. The final sentence also has an awkward clause structure around “provided that.” Practise forming accurate concessive and conditional sentences, and check verb forms and pronoun references while editing.
