Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that tourism is one of the most rapidly growing industries these days and also helps economies over the globe. However, the poor tourism can disturb the local cultures and the environment are often ignored. I believe, government should not only focus on profit they should protect the environment.

Firstly, tourism brings many positive changes in countrys' economy. It creates millions of jobs in hotels, restaurants and transport for local people. For example, many developing countries depend on foreign tourists to improve their economy. Tourism money helps government build better roads, airports and hospitals. Moreover, it shows some positive effects. As a result, tourism plays a significant role in countrys' development.

Secondly, mass tourism leads to serious damage. Environmentally, a large number of tourists leads to more pollution, plastic waste and litter on beaches and mountains. Culturally, it effects traditions and old norms. local traditions are losing their true meanings. Local dances are turned into cheap shows just for the entertainment of foreigners. Authorities should not only focusing on money they need to consider the harmful effects of mass tourism. For instance, overcrowding makes things more expensive for local people. Therefore, government should concentrate on the negative effects of overcrowding.

In conclusion, I strongly agree with this statement, tourism is definitely good for a countrys' economy, but its damage to nature and traditions are often ignored. Government should not only rely on profit but also consider its dangerous effects for local people. In this way, this benefits the individuals and society as a whole.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you agree that tourism’s harm to culture and the environment is often overlooked, while recognising its economic benefits. You address both sides with relevant examples, including jobs, infrastructure, pollution, litter and performances adapted for tourists. This covers the task well, and the examples make your main points understandable. However, some ideas are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, you say tourism “effects traditions and old norms” and that traditions lose their meaning, but do not explain how this happens or give a specific example. The conclusion also repeats your position rather than drawing together the implications. Develop the causes and consequences of your examples more fully to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs on economic benefits and harms, and a conclusion. Sequencing is generally easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” help readers identify the stages of your argument. Some linking is mechanical, however, with repeated “Moreover,” “As a result,” and “Therefore” introducing points without always showing their precise relationship. The sentence “Moreover, it shows some positive effects” is also unclear because the reference of “it” is not specific. Within the paragraph on harms, the shift from cultural effects to authorities’ responsibilities and then to higher prices could be connected more explicitly. Use clearer referencing and vary the way you link cause, example and consequence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “mass tourism,” “pollution,” “plastic waste,” “overcrowding,” and “local traditions,” so the main ideas are communicated. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “plays a significant role in … development.” However, the range and precision are uneven, and several word choices or forms are inaccurate: “poor tourism” does not express the intended idea, “effects traditions” should be “affects traditions,” and “dangerous effects” is vague in this context. Repetition of “government,” “tourism,” and “effects” also limits flexibility. Build a more precise set of collocations for environmental and cultural impacts, and check word forms and spelling, including “countries’.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “However,” “For example,” and “As a result.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “the poor tourism can disturb … are often ignored” has a faulty subject–verb structure, while “Authorities should not only focusing” needs a finite verb form. There are also agreement and article problems in “government should” and “its damage … are often ignored,” as well as punctuation issues where a comma joins complete clauses in the conclusion. Practise forming accurate complex sentences and check subject–verb agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence boundaries during revision.
