Student answer (Band 6.5)

Tourism evolved into a structured, commercial industry during mid-19th century. The industrial revolution created the foundation of the modern tourism. With the emergence of railways and with the emergence of middle class, giving them time and money for leisure created the demand for tourism.

After covid, tourism was the only sector across globe which grew at consistent rate till 2026. Toursim has following positives for an economy:

1. The influx of foreign currency leading to the growth of a economy of particular nation.

2. It build the global image for tourist destination. For example, many destination weddings are either done in Italy or in Rajasthan in India.

3. It helps in bringing local culture to the global stage. For example, the local culture transitioning to global stage due to tourism is the rise of Flamenco in Andalusia, Spain. It is a marginalised folk art form among Romani people.

While tourism can bring economic vitality, unregulated tourism can cause severe damage to both local culture and enviromemt. It includes commodification of sacred rituals into fast paced shows to fit tourist schedules and expectation.

It also includes cultural homogenization and loss of identity, as tourist oriented bussiness proliferate, historic city and centres of importance turns into risk of being only tourist spots. Due to over tourism, it also leads to behavioural conflicts and social friction.

Excessive tourism also lead to damage to natural enviroment due to overuse of natural resources and water scarcity. Due to overcrowding, there is always the risk of habitat destruction and biodiversity loss. It can lead to carbon footprint and climate stress.

I believe, tourism should be balanced and well regulated. It can have both positive and negative impacts but careful execution of the policies can bridge the gal between demand and supply of tourists.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both the benefits of tourism and the harm it can cause, then state a clear position that tourism should be balanced and regulated. The examples of destination weddings and Flamenco help make the economic and cultural benefits more concrete, while the discussion of water scarcity, habitat loss and carbon emissions covers environmental costs. This range of relevant points meets the task well. However, the response gives more space to listing impacts than to explaining how they arise or weighing them against the benefits. The opening history of tourism is also only loosely connected to your argument. To strengthen the response, develop fewer points in more depth and make your degree of agreement explicit from the introduction, then sustain that position through the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: background, benefits, harms and a concluding recommendation. The numbered list makes the positive points easy to identify, and the contrast introduced by “While tourism can bring economic vitality” signals a shift to the opposing effects. However, the opening historical paragraph does not lead clearly into the main argument, and the numbered list feels separate from the essay’s later prose. Several ideas in the harm paragraph are placed one after another without showing their relationships, so the progression can feel list-like. Some linking is also mechanical, particularly the repeated “It includes” and “It also includes.” Use topic sentences to establish each paragraph’s purpose, and connect examples to claims with clearer cause-and-effect or contrast links.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “influx of foreign currency,” “commodification,” “cultural homogenization,” “biodiversity loss” and “carbon footprint.” These choices show an attempt to express complex economic, cultural and environmental effects, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also several inaccurate or awkward forms that limit precision, such as “a economy,” “bussiness,” “enviroment,” “Toursim” and “gal” (apparently intended as “gap”). Some combinations are not idiomatic, including “grew at consistent rate” and “build the global image.” Aim to check spelling carefully and learn common collocations as complete phrases. More precise wording for the effects of tourism would also help distinguish between cultural change, commercialisation and environmental pressure.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt both simple statements and more complex structures, including the contrast in “While tourism can bring economic vitality…” and the clause beginning “Due to overcrowding.” Most sentences communicate their main point, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “It build the global image” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “Excessive tourism also lead” needs a singular verb. The opening sentence, “With the emergence of railways and with the emergence of middle class, giving them time and money…,” is an incomplete and difficult-to-follow construction. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention. Practise building complete sentences around one main clause, then add subordinate clauses where they clarify the relationship between ideas. Proofreading for agreement and articles would improve control.
