Student answer (Band 7.0)

Tourism is considered one of the major drivers of some of the fastest growing industries as well as of certain economies. I firmly believe that the growth of tourism comes with downsides that are often overlooked such as environmental mismanagement and damage to local culture.

Tourism is not just another outcome of the globalised world, but it is a significant determinant of growth of certain economies and industries. For instance, Kerela in India is advertised as the 'god's own city" which attracts a huge proportion of tourists from around the world. It provides a major boost to the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). Additionally, it also supports apparel industries which in turn uplift local artisans who devote their time in rearing silk and weaving intricate fabrics. However, one cannot ignore the negative implications of tourism.

In the city of New Delhi, tourism is prominent due to its historical and cultural importance. Many people in New Delhi are aware of the global cultural trends and sometimes seem to impersonify the mannerisms. This has indirectly diluted local cultures. In addition to this, New Delhi finds a spot in one of the most polluted cities in the world almost every consecutive year. This can be attributed to lack of environmental damage regulation measures caused by tourism as well as improper waste management. Another example to illustrate this case can be Bali, Indonesia. The oceans of Bali are clogged with plastic and this further spreading across the river systems thereby plastic pollution. Hence, the environment in Bali bears the brunte of tourism which is the same thing that fuels its economic development. Apart from this, many Indonesians have complained that the local signboards and posts have been translated into English for the convenience of the tourists which ignores the language requirements of locals.

Therefore, I am of the opinion that tourism can greatly benefit economic development and growth of dependent industries, but if the growth isn't met with proper environmental management and cultural sensitisation, then might backfire to the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: tourism supports economies but can harm the environment and local culture. You address both sides of the question and use relevant examples, including Kerala’s contribution to the state economy, pollution in Delhi and Bali, and the use of English on Indonesian signs. These examples help extend your argument rather than merely listing opinions. The conclusion also restates your view and identifies the need for environmental management and cultural sensitivity. To develop the response further, explain more precisely how tourism causes the cultural changes you describe; the claim that Delhi residents imitate global mannerisms is broad and not clearly linked to tourists. A little more explanation of the examples would make the support more consistently convincing and specific.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your position, the body paragraphs move from economic benefits to cultural and environmental costs, and the conclusion returns to your central view. Linking phrases such as “However,” “In addition to this,” and “Therefore” make the progression easy to follow. The examples are generally placed where they support the relevant point. At times, though, connections between ideas could be more explicit. For example, the discussion moves from Delhi’s cultural trends to pollution without clearly signalling the shift from cultural to environmental effects. The Bali sentence about plastic spreading through river systems is also difficult to follow. Use clearer topic sentences and more precise referencing to make these transitions smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a reasonably varied vocabulary suited to the topic, including “economic development,” “environmental mismanagement,” “historical and cultural importance,” and “improper waste management.” These choices show an effort to express ideas precisely and use less common language. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however, which limits the naturalness and precision of the essay. For instance, “impersonify the mannerisms” does not convey the intended idea, and “bears the brunte” appears to be a misspelling of an expression. “Lack of environmental damage regulation measures” is also unclear as phrased. Aim for established collocations and check spelling, especially in key claims, so the reader can focus on your argument rather than interpreting the wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including complex clauses with “which,” “as well as,” and “if,” and several sentences communicate your ideas clearly. Some grammatical errors remain, while meaning is usually recoverable. For example, “the growth isn't met with proper environmental management … then might backfire” lacks a clear subject for “might backfire”; revise it to “it might backfire on society.” In “this further spreading across the river systems,” the clause needs a finite verb, such as “this further spreads.” There are also issues with articles and sentence construction, as in “finds a spot in one of the most polluted cities.” Review clause completeness and ensure each verb has a clear subject. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen control.
