Student answer (Band 6.5)

There is a rapid increase in the number of visitors at places where tourism is growing. This increase is accompanied by an increase in economy but the damaged caused by visitors to local cultural and environment is often not given enough attention. I strongly disagree with this point. The tourism generally does not cause any damage to the local culture if proper rules are implemented by the relative authorities, minor disturbance might be observed in the environmental cleanliness but this can be overcome by the economy that tourism boosts.

Generally, visitors who come to various places are civilized enough to keep an eye on the environmental cleanliness but there might be some people who neglect it causing littering in the places they visit. Although damage can be dealt to the properties there such as benches or other tourist accommodation facilities but they can be repaired by the economic boast that tourism gives to that place. More facilities for proper disposal of wastes can be added along with proper protection of the properties there by either human guards or other protective equipment. As a result the damage to the environment can be reduced.

Cultural values hardly experience any sort of problem by the visitors if certain rules and regulations are already issued. These rules must be strict in order to preserve the cultural identity of that place. For example in Maldives there is a strict ban on bikini and improper swimsuits, no matter where you stay in the country and which beach you visit these rules must be obeyed and any violation can leave you with heavy fines and even imprisonment. These rules are to ensure the religious values of the country. In this way the cultural values are protected.

To sum up things, Tourism although brings certain problems along with it but the reward that it gives can balance out the problems. And certain issues can be avoided if the rules and regulations of tourists attractions are firm and implemented.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you disagree that tourism’s harm is ignored, arguing that regulation can protect culture and tourism income can offset environmental damage. The Maldives example gives relevant support for your point about cultural rules, and you address both culture and the environment. However, the environmental argument is less fully developed: the claim that economic benefits can compensate for damage is asserted rather than demonstrated, and the discussion focuses mainly on litter and repair of facilities rather than wider environmental effects. The opening also describes the issue more than it clarifies exactly how far you agree with the statement. To strengthen the response, explain the limits of regulation and provide a specific example of how tourism revenue can fund environmental protection.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, moving from an introduction to separate paragraphs on environmental and cultural effects, followed by a conclusion. This makes the main line of argument easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “Generally,” “For example,” and “As a result” to signal relationships between ideas. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however: the first body paragraph shifts from visitors’ behaviour to damaged facilities and then to protective measures without clearly distinguishing these points. The conclusion repeats the central claim rather than drawing the two strands together. Use clearer topic sentences and more explicit links between each problem, its consequence, and the proposed solution to make progression more consistently controlled.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “environmental cleanliness,” “cultural identity,” “rules and regulations,” and “religious values.” These choices allow you to discuss both sides of the issue, and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “littering” and “heavy fines.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise: “the damaged caused” should be “the damage caused,” “economic boast” appears to mean “economic boost,” and “tourist attractions” is more natural than “tourists attractions.” Repetition of “rules” and “damage” also limits flexibility. Aim for more precise collocations and check word forms and spelling carefully; the suggestions below offer useful alternatives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “if proper rules are implemented” and a relative clause in “people who neglect it.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main ideas remain understandable. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “the tourism” is not normally used in this general sense, while “the damaged caused” has an incorrect form; “these rules must be obeyed” is well controlled by comparison. The long opening sentence also joins several claims in a way that makes the structure difficult to manage. Review article use and noun forms, and divide long sentences where necessary. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
