Student answer (Band 6.0)

One of the fastest growing sector is tourism, which contributes to worldwide economies. At the same time, tourism can cause damage to local cultures and to the environment, but sometimes it is not considered. I firmily agree with the statement, since tourism can definetily harm nature and destroy the local cultural background of a city.

Tourism can cause a considerable amount of damage to the environment. First of all, the main supporter of travelling is the transportation system. Most of the types of transportations available increment pollution in our planet. For instance, travelling across countries through a plane produces an exagerrate amount of pollution.

Regarding the local culture, tourism can deviate the main traditions of a particular city. Since with the growth of tourism most of the countries are becoming international, the local culture is losing its roots. For example, some Italian typical meals or recipes are now available worldwide, and they are losing their authenticity.

On the other hand, some people are ignoring that tourism is damaging the planet and the traditional cultures. They are not convinced that most of the pollution and general damage to our environment is linked to this particular sector. For example, people can believe that while travelling on a plane, the harm that it is causing is less damaging than moving with a car. Even though they know that it is not one of the best kind of transportation in terms of pollution, since they are usually travelling with approximately other 200 people on that specific flight, they think that it is not harming the environment in a shocking way.

To conclude, I agree with the statement since tourism is responsible for a good amount of pollution in our planet. Moreover, local cultures are being destroyed by tourism since most of the countries are becoming international.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction to the conclusion: you agree that tourism harms both the environment and local cultures. You address both parts of the topic and give relevant examples, including air travel and Italian food. However, the environmental argument is more clearly explained than the cultural one. The claim that international availability makes Italian recipes lose authenticity needs a clearer explanation of how tourism causes this change, and the point about people underestimating flight pollution partly repeats the environmental argument rather than extending your case about ignored damage. To strengthen the response, develop each main idea with a more specific cause-and-effect explanation and ensure examples directly support the claim that the damage is often ignored.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs on environmental and cultural effects, a paragraph about people overlooking the damage, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “First of all,” “Regarding the local culture,” and “To conclude” helps readers follow the progression. However, some connections are mechanical, and the paragraph beginning “On the other hand” does not present a contrasting view; it continues the argument that damage is ignored. The relationship between this paragraph and the preceding examples is therefore not fully clear. Some references, such as “it” in the discussion of air travel, could also be made more explicit. Use transitions that accurately show the relationship between ideas and link each example back to the paragraph’s main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “pollution,” “authenticity,” “local culture,” and “transportation system,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “cultural background” and “traditional cultures.” However, several word-choice and collocation problems reduce precision: “main supporter of travelling” is unclear, “increment pollution” is unnatural, and “an exagerrate amount” is not the correct form. Spelling errors such as “firmily” and “definetily” are noticeable. Some wording is also broad or repetitive, particularly “damage” and “becoming international.” Aim for more natural collocations and precise terms, and proofread spelling so that your vocabulary choices communicate the intended meaning accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses beginning with “Since” and “Even though,” and most ideas remain understandable. Some grammatical errors, however, affect accuracy. The opening has a subject–verb agreement error in “One of the fastest growing sector is tourism”; the plural noun is needed after “one of.” The sentence “Since with the growth of tourism most of the countries are becoming international” is an incomplete construction, while “the harm that it is causing” has an unclear reference and awkward clause structure. There are also issues with articles and number, as in “one of the best kind of transportation.” Practise checking agreement, sentence completeness, and clause structure, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
