Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar graphs illustrate the percentage of people holding full driving licences in Great Britain by age and sex.
Overall, it is clear that driving liscence holders grew over the period for both men and women. In 1975/76 majority of men had license as compared to women.
To begin with, in 1975/76, approximately 85% of men aged 30–39 held a driving licence, making this the highest figure among male age groups. A similar proportion was recorded among those aged 40–49. However, the percentage was considerably lower among younger and older men. By 2006, the figures had increased among most older age groups, with men aged 50–59 and 60–69 recording approximately 90%.
Turning to women, the percentage of licence holders was considerably lower in 1975/76, particularly among those aged 70 and over, at just 2%. By 2006, however, this figure had risen to approximately 30%. Similarly, the proportion among women aged 30–39 increased from around 50% to nearly 80%. A substantial rise was also observed in the 40–49 and 50–59 age groups.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the broad rise in licence holding among both sexes and support this with relevant comparisons, including women aged 70 and over (about 2% to 30%) and women aged 30–39 (around 50% to nearly 80%). However, the overview is incomplete: it says men were more likely to hold licences in 1975/76 but does not summarise the key age pattern or the notable exception that young men’s rate changed little by 2006. Some details are also imprecise: the highest male figure in 1975/76 was about 81% for ages 40–49, rather than approximately 85% for ages 30–39. The 2006 male figures for ages 50–59 and 60–69 are close to 90%, but the response omits several useful comparisons. A fuller overview and more accurate selection of key figures would strengthen coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a brief overview, and separate paragraphs for men and women. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with” and “Turning to women” help readers follow the shift between groups, while “By 2006” signals the time comparison. However, the overview is very brief and does not provide a strong organising summary of the main patterns, so the body paragraphs carry most of the comparison. Within the men’s paragraph, the move from the 1975/76 peak to the 2006 figures is understandable but could be more systematically organised by age group or by change over time. Use clearer links to compare the two years and sexes, rather than relying mainly on repeated time markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of task-appropriate vocabulary, including “recorded,” “considerably lower,” “increased,” and “a substantial rise,” which helps describe comparisons without excessive repetition. The phrase “holding full driving licences” is also suitable for the topic. Some word choices are less precise or natural: “driving licence holders grew” suggests the people themselves grew, rather than the percentage increasing, and “making this the highest figure” could be expressed more precisely as the highest proportion. There is also a spelling error in “liscence,” and the spelling varies between “license” and “licence”; use the British form consistently for this Great Britain task. More precise collocations and consistent spelling would add the flexibility and control needed for a stronger performance.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and most sentences communicate the intended comparisons clearly. For example, “By 2006, however, this figure had risen to approximately 30%” uses a suitable time phrase and past perfect construction, while the sentence beginning “However” contrasts age groups effectively. Some grammatical errors remain. In “In 1975/76 majority of men had license,” the article is missing before “majority,” and the noun phrase needs a determiner before “license.” The overview’s “holders grew” also creates an unclear grammatical relationship between the people and the change being described. Check articles and ensure that the subject of each sentence accurately represents what increased. Greater accuracy in these areas, alongside your existing sentence variety, would improve control.
